"Hey Father, praise me. I've defeated the evil wizard."
―Gretel

Gretel was a girl kidnapped and raised by Eve and Adam Moonlit, and the twin sister of Hänsel. Born as part of Project 'Ma', the newborn twins were taken by their father, Seth Salmhofer, to Held's Forest and raised by the Moonlit Family after Adam killed Seth. After being abandoned in the forest during a famine, Hänsel and Gretel murdered their foster parents and split Adam's Original Sin into the vessels of sin.

History[]

Early Life[]

Gretel was born along with her twin brother, Hänsel, on December 27, EC 0 in the royal institute in Magic Kingdom Levianta as part of Project 'Ma'. After being birthed by his father, Seth Salmhofer, Gretel and her brother were placed in a life support system, due to having problems breathing on their own. Celebrated by the people of the Magic Kingdom, their births marked the first year of the new Evillious Calendar.

Five days after their birth, when Ly Noël launched an attack on the research institute with the remnants of Apocalypse, Gretel and her brother were taken by Seth from the laboratory as he fled with Ly. When Meta Twiright used a gas derived from the brainwashing drug Venom to capture the fugitives, Ly collapsed, but the twins and their father remained unaffected. Escaping into the night, they fled to Elphegort, Seth hiding with his children in Held's Forest.

One night, on a stroll through the forest after a year of being hidden by Seth, he settled them near a tree and left them. Soon after, she and were discovered by Adam Moonlit. The wizard took the infants and fled through the forest, killing Seth during his pursuit. After Adam showed the children to his wife, Eve, the woodcutter couple adopted the newly orphaned babies and raised them as their own. Over the years, Eve tried teaching Gretel but the child failed to understand any of it. He also kept a glass bottle as a personal treasure. At one point, she was sliced in the face from a sword by Hänsel while he was playing with it, and her brother was harshly scolded by their parents afterwards.

Moonlit Abandonment[]

In EC 013, fragments of the Levia-Behemo dragon descended upon the twins as two lights and fused with their bodies. A few months later, in EC 014, Gretel and her brother were led by their parents deep into the forest on a moonlit night, following a famine in Elphegort resulting from the Levianta Catastrophe. Despite questioning their parents on where they were going and why they looked so sad, the twins received no answers, continuing to be lead deeper into the forest. Eventually, Gretel and her brother realized that they would be lost if they continued on the path and were soon after abandoned by their parents to die. Seemingly betrayed, Gretel and her brother concluded their parents were actually a wicked wizard and his henchwoman that had tricked them.

Using the glass bottle full of moonlight she had around her neck, Gretel lit the path as they wandered together. At last, Hänsel and Gretel arrived back home, recognizing it as the "wizard's house". Welcomed into the home, the twins then murdered the "wizard" and his "henchwoman". Afterwards, the twins were approached by an old woman who referred to them as the “Twins of God”.

Watching the "wizard" burn to ashes in the oven, they witnessed his body become the embodiment of his Original Sin. Splitting it into seven fragments, the twins also performed a Re_birthday, remaking the six spirits of the earthlings into Demons of Sin. Housing each demon inside a household object, the two thus created the vessels of sin. Afterward, they scattered the vessels across the world. Gretel and her brother then slept in the witch's house before deciding to go out and search for their "real" mother and father.

Stupid Maid[]

"Do you know Arte and Pollo's true identities? Are they your minions?"
"No. It's a bit difficult for me to describe. They're Hänsel and Gretel— reincarnations of friends of mine, or parents or kids."
―Carlos and Vlad Tuberci

Following her death, Gretel and her brother reincarnated as the twins Arte and Pollo in the Beelzenian Empire in EC 298. Losing their parents at a young age, the twins became servants to the Marlon Family and became obsessively loyal attendants to Carlos Marlon. After finding and keeping the wine glass vessel of sin, the two presented it to their dying master in July of EC 323 as a means to save Carlos from his eventual fate of overeating.

Once the Duke forged a contract with the Demon of Gluttony, the two supported "Evil Food Eater Marlon" as he began indulging in increasingly disgusting foods, killing any staff that opposed the feudal lord on his orders. As her brother took command of their master's army of undead, the servant helped to do battle against the imperial soldiers sent to subdue Carlos. Arte was later killed and devoured by Carlos around August of EC 325, following her brother.

Fifth Pierrot[]

"Don’t really care. Both of the men she’s considering joining are false fathers to her. He’ll just end up here in the end. And at that time, she’ll remember everything."
―Hänsel to Carlos

In EC 595, Gretel's soul reincarnated as Rin Abelard; abandoned by her mother, the girl grew up in an orphanage before being adopted by the millionaire Julius Abelard at a young age. Raised kindly but firmly by her father, Rin grew up completely devoted to him. At the age of seven, the girl discovered the Glass of Marlon in her father's treasury and unwittingly contracted to the new Demon of Gluttony, Carlos, through the spirit of Hänsel.

After killing her childhood friend Lemy Kun's manager Ton Corpa on October 6, EC 609, Rin was brought into her father's criminal organization Père Noël as "Fifth Pierrot", sent on numerous assassination missions for her father. She was later approached by Seventh Magician in September of EC 610 and asked to flee with him; reporting the traitor to her father, Rin continued her assassination work until being shot by Eighth Sniper on December 26. After reviving a month later, Rin followed the Demon of Gluttony to Merrigod Plateau and joined her father in battling the traitorous Magician and Sniper before being killed with Sniper's Grim the End.

Evil's Theater[]

"Search, search, search for him left, right or below; find the holder of all keys, the Master of the Hellish Yard."
―The Servants following Ma's "testimony"

Once Carlos awakened as Master of the Graveyard, Gretel and her twin followed suit, awakening as the Servants and continuing to serve him; they did this by tearing apart any intruders to Evil's Theater, killing them and serving them as meals to their master. Elluka Sudou later encountered and escaped from them, and they attended her trial for her by the Master of the Court.

Although calling for Elluka's execution, they were forced to comply when the Waiter recruited her as a choreman. When Elluka submitted a "motion" to review the script regarding her vision for the Director Doll's utopia, the Servants attended the faux hearing but largely ignored the prophecy.

In EC 998, the Servants attended the "trial" meeting called by the Master of the Court as they searched for the vessel of Wrath. After Ma claimed the last vessel was in the hands of the Master of the Hellish Yard, the Servants frantically ordered everyone to look for "her". The Servants were later killed in the destruction of the world the following year.

World's End[]

After the Third Period's destruction and subsequent merging with the Hellish Yard in EC 999, Gretel and her twin joined Carlos at the Marlon Mansion in Gasto, cooking and serving his desired meals in the forms of Arte and Pollo. When Tasan Party soldiers arrived with a Black Box, Arte and Pollo captured and interrogated a soldier about Evil's Theater under Carlos' orders. After reporting their findings to Carlos, Arte and the other servants accompanied him to Evil's Theater; the twins later escaped the theater with Lich when Ma absorbed Carlos.

Resting under a tree, Arte watched as the confrontation between Rin Avadonia, Gallerian and Ma carried out. Hearing Clarith sing the Clockwork Lullaby, Arte discussed the lullaby and Clarith with Lich before taking part herself.

After Ma was defeated, Arte accompanied Carlos, Pollo and Eater to the Grave Yard as part of their preparation to journey to a parallel world, leaving Lich behind when they couldn't find him. Once they returned, Arte and Pollo were approached by Lich with Ron Grapple in tow and asked to undo their curse on him; not remembering they had cast it to begin with, he discussed it with his twin. Later, Arte watched the ball at the Lucifenian Royal Palace within Evils Theater II.

After Lich made Arte a new body, she and Pollo were tasked by Meta to clean out the second floor of Evil's Theater II, which had her belongings. While cleaning, the two discovered akashic records and played them on a jukebox, although stopping after they were called upstairs by Carlos. Soon after, she accompanied Carlos and the rest of his servants to the parallel world, serving him. During the trip, the ship was attacked by Ma, causing it to malfunction and threatening to crash, only for all of them to survive the ordeal.

Exploring New Worlds[]

Once they had arrived in the World of Giants and Beastmen, Arte and Pollo were ordered to begin preparations to attack the giants, serving them as a meal for their master. Readily agreeing to this, she was told to ride on Eater to reach the ground rather than lowering the theater.  However, sometime after this, the theater crew was betrayed by the bunny hero Jarre and Arte was killed along with most of the others.

After transitioning to the World of Angels and Demons, Arte's soul was placed inside the body of one of Jarre's friends. She and Pollo were then set to the task of turning the main room of the theater into a restaurant.  Once this was completed, she began luring children towards the theater in the hopes of finding someone to be Carlos' new body.

Legacy[]

Due to the disruption of fate caused by Abyss P.L. and King Leonhart, Gretel's reincarnation wasn't born into the world with Hänsel's incarnation, though the originally intended reincarnation, Princess Riliane, continued to share her visage. After Hänsel's soul became a familiar to the Demon of Gluttony, the sun god contemplated if the twins had discarded their forgotten reason for existing in the first place. Centuries later, Gallerian Octo began hearing the voices of Gretel and her twin, telling him repeatedly how he had been abandoned by his father, Ma. Gretel's degraded will later manifested as the female servant, serving the Master of the Graveyard.

Ma wrote several screenplays involving Hänsel and Gretel and adapted them into films. While watching the films with an intruder to Evil's Theater, Ma playfully questioned their existence, citing they seemed to be hidden so well by their parents that there were no recorded documents of them in existence. While reflecting on the "motions" of the Master of the Court, Elluka Sudou noted how Gretel's reincarnation, RinAbelard, was uncharacteristically born without a Hänsel counterpart. Elluka also wondered what became of the twins, questioning if they needed to ask the Master of the Hellish Yard to find an answer.

Personality and Traits[]

"You’re kidding, you don’t even know that you’ve died? You stupidly used ‘Punishment’ on your own country. And thanks to that—we’re all sons of bitches!"
―Gretel to Gallerian

Gretel was a dumb and somewhat naive girl. Typically free-spirited and playful, she was always ready to have fun whenever the opportunity arose and rarely sulked over anything for long. At the same time, her simple nature made her rather submissive to others, quick to serve her superior's whims. This was especially true of her twin brother, Hänsel, where the girl often let him boss her around largely without complaint; despite this, she sometimes took the lead in supporting him in certain situations.

Being a HER, Gretel was also rather malicious, happily committing murder with a dose of mockery. After being abandoned by her false mother and father, she and her twin became embittered by their apparent apathy and decided to find their real parents, despite not knowing who they might be. Following her reincarnation as Arte, Gretel became wholly devoted to Carlos Marlon, serving her demonic lord in whatever he needed; she also inherited the stupid servant's peculiar laugh.

Likewise, after her reincarnation as Rin Abelard, Gretel was uncharacteristically depressed from her master's attack against Pale Clockworker, still feeling some attachment to her previous incarnation's adoptive parent. Despite this lingering sentimentality, Gretel's loyalty ultimately lied with Carlos. Otherwise, the demonic familiar was intrigued by the "Irregular" Rin Avadonia and happily befriended her look-alike, following the girl on her journey through the Hellish Yard to pass the time and helping her on several occasions.

Skills and Abilities[]

Due to being designed after Behemo of Levia-Behemo, Gretel was an imperfect copy of one of the dragon gods. As a result, the young twin's shadow could come to life and manifest in dark, twisted forms, such as arms, hands, or other appendages, and be freely manipulated by her. Gretel also showed some other magical capabilities, as she was able to split the Original Sin into seven pieces and scatter them across the world.

It also allowed Gretel to reincarnate every few centuries, her soul fated to be reborn in an identical body, typically with her reincarnated brother as a twin. However, if either of the girl's fated parents had children with someone else before her intended birth, Gretel could instead incarnate as one of those children instead or not incarnate in that particular reincarnation cycle at all.

After becoming a familiar to the Demon of Gluttony, Gretel was able to possess others on her master's behalf, allowing her to act in the same capacity as the demon himself for his contractors. However, this also meant she shared her master's weaknesses, unable to manifest her spirit and move freely outside conceptual worlds due to the Third Period's rules. Possessing the combined experience of all her reincarnations, Gretel was extremely skilled in assassination, though pretty terrible at cooking.

Character Connections[]

Seth Salmhofer: Gretel's real father. Gretel didn't remember Seth, growing up in Adam's care, but she later expressed a wish to go find her "real" mother after Adam and Eve were dead. She passed on a fanatic loyalty to Seth to all her reincarnations, showing this loyalty to anyone resembling her.

Adam Moonlit: Gretel's foster father. Gretel grew up thinking of Adam as her father, however she became convinced he was a wicked wizard after she and Hänsel were abandoned by him and delighted in bringing about him death. She later considered him to be a troublesome man, discovering his Original Sin among his ashes; similarly the girl treated him with little familial affection at the end of the world, subduing him with the Clockworker's Doll with little more than quips.

Eve Moonlit: Gretel's foster father. Hänsel grew up thinking of Adam as his father, even trying, albeit failing, to be taught the woodcarving trade he engaged him. Later, however, he became convinced Adam was the wicked henchman of a witch after he and Gretel were abandoned by him. After killing Adam, Hänsel delighted in his accomplishment and gave him no more consideration after discovering Eve's Original Sin.

Hänsel: Gretel's twin brother. Gretel loved her brother and was always beside him if she could help it, holding his hand to comfort him while lost in the woods and leading the way with the bottle; later she would aid him in defeating their foster parents. Gretel continued to stay with after Adam's death and would usually be by her side in their reincarnations.

Arte: One of Gretel's reincarnations. Gretel's appearance and soul passed on to Arte's, and with it she passed on her loyalty to anyone resembling Seth. Despite this, she has made Carlos as an exception.

Rin Abelard: Another of Gretel's reincarnations. Gretel's appearance and soul passed on to Rin Abelard, and with it he passed on his loyalty to anyone resembling Seth. Despite this, she has made her adoptive father Julius as an exception.

Rin Avadonia: One of Gretel's intended reincarnations. Due to the disturbance of fate caused by Abyss P.L. and Leonahart Beelzenia, Gretel wasn't born as Rin, or at all, during this period. In an alternate timeline, Gretel worked with Rin and formed a partnership with her, rescuing her lookalike on more than one occasion. Despite this she was not always cooperative with Rin and didn't regard the girl very seriously.
