Gretel was a girl kidnapped and raised by Eve and Adam Moonlit, and the twin sister of Hänsel. Born as part of Project 'Ma', the newborn twins were taken by their mother, Meta Salmhofer, to Held's Forest and raised by the Moonlit Family after Eve killed Meta. After being abandoned in the forest during a famine, Hänsel and Gretel murdered their foster parents and split Eve's Original Sin into the vessels of sin.
History[]
Early Life[]
Gretel was born along with her twin brother, Hänsel, on December 27, EC 0 in the royal institute in Magic Kingdom Levianta as part of Project 'Ma'. After being birthed by her mother, Meta Salmhofer, Gretel and her brother were placed in a life support system, due to having problems breathing on their own. Celebrated by the people of the Magic Kingdom, their births marked the first year of the new Evillious Calendar.
Five days after their birth, when Pale Noël launched an attack on the research institute with the remnants of Apocalypse, Gretel and her brother were taken by Meta from the laboratory as she fled with Pale. When Seth Twiright used a gas derived from the brainwashing drug Venom to capture the fugitives, Pale collapsed, but the twins and their mother remained unaffected. Escaping into the night, they fled to Elphegort, Meta hiding with her children in Held's Forest.During her time fleeing, she encounter Adam Moonlit. While disturst with each other, Adam put down some supplies that could help Meta and her children survive for few days. after hesitating, Meta grabs the supplies Adam left for her as Adam walk away.
One night, on a stroll through the forest after a year of being hidden by Meta, she settled them near a tree and left them. Soon after, she and Hänsel were discovered by Eve Moonlit. The witch took the infants and fled through the forest, killing Meta during her pursuit. After Eve showed the children to her husband, Adam, the woodcutter couple adopted the newly orphaned babies and raised them as their own. Secretly knowing the two weren't their real parents, Gretel caused tons of mischief for them over the years, scolded by her mother each time.
Moonlit Abandonment[]
In EC 013, fragments of the Levia-Behemo dragon descended upon the twins as two lights and fused with their bodies. A few months later, in EC 014, Gretel and her brother were led by their parents deep into the forest on a moonlit night following a famine in Elphegort resulting from the Levianta Catastrophe.
Despite questioning their parents on where they were going, the twins received no answers, continuing to be lead deeper into the forest. Eventually, Gretel and her brother realized that they would be lost if they continued on the path and were soon after abandoned by their parents to die. Seemingly betrayed, Gretel and her brother concluded their parents were actually a wicked witch and her henchman that had tricked them.
Using the glass bottle full of moonlight, the two lit their path as they wandered. At last, Gretel and Hänsel arrived back home, recognizing it as the "witch's house". The twins then murdered the "witch" and her "henchman".
Watching the "witch" burn to ashes in the oven, they witnessed her body become the embodiment of her Original Sin. Splitting it into seven fragments, the twins also performed a Re_birthday, remaking the six spirits of the earthlings into Demons of Sin. Housing each demon inside a household object, the two thus created the vessels of sin. Afterward, they scattered the vessels across the world. Gretel and her brother then slept in the witch's house before deciding to go out and search for their "real" mother and father.
Wicked Maid[]
Following her death, Gretel and her brother reincarnated as the twins Arte and Pollo in the Beelzenian Empire in EC 298. Losing their parents at a young age, the twins became servants to the Conchita Family and became obsessively loyal attendants to Calros Conchita. After finding and keeping the wine glass vessel of sin, the two presented it to their dying master in July of EC 323 as a means to save Carlos from his eventual fate of overeating.
Once the Duke forged a contract with the Demon of Gluttony, the two supported "Evil Food Eater Conchita" as he began indulging in increasingly disgusting foods, killing any staff that opposed the feudal lord on his orders. Carloslater gave Arte command of her undead horde guarding the Conchita Mansion and the maid freely used the glass to control the corpse soldiers for her master. Arte was later killed and devoured by Calros around August of EC 325.
Fifth Pierrot[]
In EC 595, Gretel's soul reincarnated as Rin Abelard; abandoned by her mother, the girl grew up in an orphanage before being adopted by the millionaire Julia Abelard at a young age. Raised kindly but firmly by her mother, Rin grew up completely devoted to her. At the age of seven, the girl discovered the Glass of Conchita in her mother's treasury and unwittingly contracted to the new Demon of Gluttony, Carlos, through the spirit of Hänsel.
After killing her childhood friend Lemy Kun's manager Ton Corpa on October 6, EC 609, Rin was brought into her mother's criminal organization Père Noël as "Fifth Pierrot", sent on numerous assassination missions for her mother. She was later approached by Seventh Magician in September of EC 610 and asked to flee with her; reporting the traitor to her mother, Rin continued her assassination work until being shot by Eighth Sniper on December 26. After reviving a month later, Rin followed the Demon of Gluttony to Merrigod Plateau and joined her mother in battling the traitorous Magician and Sniper before being killed with Sniper's Grim the End.
Servant to the Glass[]
After Gretel's soul was brought into the Glass of Conchita by the Demon of Gluttony and her memory of her past lives reawakened, the familiar returned to serving the demon Carlos with Hänsel. While the three dined together, Gretel watched the events of the Duel of Merrigod Plateau, seeing Julia discard her human body and self-destruct her red cat body with Black Box Type S, dragging everyone caught in the blast into Seventh Magician's inner psychological world.
She then observed the conflict between Elluka Clockworker, Gumillia, Adam Moonlit, Levia, Behemo, and, later, Carlos. To her dismay, Carlos attempted to kill Elluka, summoning the massive skeleton Worldeater and clashing it with the mage and gods. After seeing the resulting blast cause the souls of Elluka, Behemo, and Adam to fuse into Ma, Carlos returned and Gretel sulked over her master's near murder of her former adoptive mother. Later on, she learned about her master's ambition to find the Grave Yard where the technology of the Second Period was located to become the Master of the Graveyard and devour everything.
Evil's Theater[]
Once Carlos awakened as Master of the Graveyard, Gretel and her twin followed suit, awakening as the Servants and continuing to serve him; they did this by tearing apart any intruders to Evil's Theater, killing them and serving them as meals to their master. Gammon Octo later encountered and escaped from them, and they attended his trial for him by the Master of the Court
Although calling for Gammon's execution, they were forced to comply when the Waiter recruited him as a choreman. When Gammon submitted a "motion" to review the script regarding his vision for the Director Doll's utopia, the Servants attended the faux hearing but largely ignored the prophecy.
In EC 998, the Servants attended the "trial" meeting called by the Master of the Court as they searched for the vessel of Wrath. After Ma claimed the last vessel was in the hands of the Master of the Hellish Yard, the Servants frantically ordered everyone to look for her. The Servants were later killed in the destruction of the world the following year.
World's End[]
After the Third Period's destruction and subsequent merging with the Hellish Yard in EC 999, Gretel and her twin joined Calros at the Conchita Mansion in Gasto, cooking and serving him desired meals in the forms of Arte and Pollo. When Tasan Party soldiers arrived with a Black Box, Arte and Pollo captured and interrogated a soldier about Evil's Theater under Calros's orders. After reporting their findings to Carlos, Arte and the other servants accompanied her to Evil's Theater; the twins later escaped the theater with Lich when Ma absorbed Carlos.
Resting under a tree, Arter watched as the confrontation between Rinne, Nyoze and Ma carried out. Hearing Kyle sing the Clockwork Lullaby, Arte discussed the lullaby and Kyle with Lich before taking part herself.
After Ma was defeated, Arte accompanied Calros, Pollo and Eater to the Grave Yard as part of their preparation to journey to a parallel world, leaving Lich behind when they couldn't find him. Once they returned, Arte and Pollo were approached by Lich with Ron Grapple in tow and asked to undo their curse on him; not remembering they had cast it to begin with, she discussed it with her twin. Later, Arte watched the ball at the Lucifenian Royal Palace within the sky fortress.
After Lich made Arte a new body, she and Pollo were tasked by Seth to clean out the second floor of Evil's Theater II, which had his belongings. While cleaning, the two discovered akashic records and played them on a jukebox, although stopping after they were called upstairs by Carlos. Soon after, she accompanied Carlos and the rest of his servants to the parallel world, serving him. During the trip, the ship was attacked by Ma, causing it to malfunction and threatening to crash, only for all of them to survive the ordeal.
Exploring New Worlds[]
Once they had arrived in the World of Giants and Beastmen, Pollo and Arte were ordered to begin preparations to attack the giants, serving them as a meal for their master. Readily agreeing to this, she was told to ride on Eater to reach the ground rather than lowering the theater. However, sometime after this, the theater crew was betrayed by the bunny hero Jarre and Pollo was killed along with most of the others.
After transitioning to the World of Angels and Demons, Arte's soul was placed inside the body of Jarre's friend. She and Pollo were then set to the task of turning the main room of the theater into a restaurant.
Legacy[]
Due to the disruption of fate caused by Abyss E.L. and Queen Prim, Gretel's reincarnation wasn't born into the world with Hänsel's incarnation, though the originally intended reincarnation, Princess Riliane, continued to share her visage. After Hänsel's soul became a familiar to the Demon of Gluttony, the sun god contemplated if the twins had discarded their forgotten reason for existing in the first place. Centuries later, Nyoze Sudou began hearing the voices of Hänsel and his twin, telling her repeatedly how he had been abandoned by his mother, Ma. Gretel's degraded will later manifested as the female servant, serving the Master of the Graveyard.
Ma wrote several screenplays involving Hänsel and Gretel and adapted them into films. While watching the films with an intruder to Evil's Theater, Ma playfully questioned their existence, citing they seemed to be hidden so well by their parents that there were no recorded documents of them in existence. While reflecting on the "motions" of the Master of the Court, Gammon Octo noted how Gretel's reincarnation, Rin Abelard, was uncharacteristically born without a Hänsel counterpart. Gammon also wondered what became of the twins, questioning if they needed to ask the Master of the Hellish Yard to find an answer.
Personality and Traits[]
Gretel was a haughty and devious girl, as well as bossy with her inferiors. Self-centered and unapologetic to the core, the girl typically acted as she pleased, unconcerned with who else suffered at her expense and critical toward practically anyone who criticized her. Compounding this, she could be very sarcastic and was quick to insult others. This was especially true of her treatement towards her twin brother, Hänsel; despite this, she still had some faith in her brother and at times relied on him.
Being a HER, Gretel was also rather malicious, playing pranks on her false family as a child and later happily committing murder. Following her reincarnation as Arte, Gretel became wholly devoted to Carlos Conchita, serving her demonic lord in whatever he needed and acting uncharacteristically humble, albeit relatively casual, when conversing with him.
Likewise, after her reincarnation as Rin Abelard, Grete; was uncharacteristically depressed from her master's attack against Elluka Clockworker, still feeling some attachment to her previous incarnation's adoptive parent. Despite this lingering sentimentality, Gretell's loyalty ultimately lied with Carlos. Otherwise, the demonic familiar was intrigued by the "Irregular" Rinne Avadonia and happily befriended her look-alike, following the girl on her journey through the Hellish Yard to pass the time and helping her on several occasions.
Skills and Abilities[]
Due to being designed after Levia of Levia-Behemo, Gretel was an imperfect copy of one of the dragon gods. Gretel also showed some other magical capabilities, as she was able to split the Original Sin into seven pieces and scatter them across the world.
Gretel was able to reincarnate, her soul fated to be reborn in an identical body every few centuries, typically with her reincarnated brother as a twin. However, if either of the girl's fated parents had children with someone else before her intended birth, Gretel could instead incarnate as one of those children instead or not incarnate in that particular reincarnation cycle at all.
After becoming a familiar to the Demon of Gluttony, Gretel was able to possess others on her master's behalf, allowing her to act in the same capacity as the demon himself for his contractors. However, this also meant she shared her master's weaknesses, unable to manifest her spirit and move freely outside conceptual worlds due to the Third Period's rules. Possessing the combined experience of all her reincarnations, Gretel was extremely skilled in assassination, cooking and menial service. These abilities made her fit to continue acting as Banica's maid and adviser. After her awakening, Gretel once again had a physical body; as one of the Servants, she was capable of wielding a knife to great effect, able to kill most of the intruders to Evil's Theater and serve them as meals to Carlos.
Character Connections[]
Meta Salmhofer: Gretel's real mother. Gretel didn't remember Meta, growing up in Eve's care, but she later expressed a wish to find her "real" mother after Adam and Eve were dead. She passed on a fanatic loyalty to Meta to most of her reincarnations, showing this loyalty to all her mother figures and people resembling her with the exception of Banica Marlon
Eve Moonlit: Gretel's foster mother. While initially considering Eve her mother, at some point Gretel realized she was not her true mother and was resentful of this, causing her foster mother trouble and acting out as a form of punishment. She later was convinced Eve was a wicked witch after she and Hänsel were abandoned by her. Delighting in her accomplishment after killing Eve, Gretel later considered her to be a pretentious and troublesome woman.
Adam Moonlit: Gretel's foster father. Gretel grew up thinking of Adam as her father, however she became convinced he was the wicked henchman of a witch after she and Hänsel were abandoned by him and delighted in bringing about his death. She appeared to have strong lingering resentment towards the man for abandoning she and Hänsel to starvation but she is royal and devoted to his look-alike, Carlos Conchita
Hänsel: Gretel's twin brother. Gretel loved her brother and was always beside him if she could help it, taking comfort from holding his hand and helping him defeat the witch and henchman. She also acted as Hänsel's voice of reason, telling him the truth of what he heard and saw after their foster parents were dead. She stayed with him after Eve's death and would usually be by his side in their reincarnations.
Arte: One of Gretel's reincarnations. Gretel passed on her appearance and soul to Arte's, and with it she passed on her loyalty to anyone resembling Meta with the exception of Banica Marlon and instead during his time as Arte, royal to serve Carlos.
Rin Abelard: Another of Gretel's reincarnations. Gretel's appearance is unsually not passed on Rin until her death but her soul does get passed on to Rin Abelard, and with it he passed on his loyalty to anyone resembling Meta, such as Julia.
Rinne Avadonia: One of Gretel's intended reincarnations. Due to the disturbance of fate caused by Abyss E.L. and Prim Marlon, Gretel wasn't born as Rinne, or at all, during this period. In an alternate timeline, Gretel worked with Rinne and formed a partnership with her, rescuing her lookalike on more than one occasion. Despite this she was not always cooperative with Rinne and didn't regard the girl very seriously.
Trivia[]
- While Carlos Conchita resemble Adam heavily, the twins, Arte and Pollo still follow him due him helping their mother when she was in a run. Finding Carlos first instead of Banica and was with him most of his and their life, resulting their royalty are with Carlos, not with Banica, despite her resembling Meta. It did kinda help that Arte and Pollo kinda feel a sense of love to him as a father figure both to Adam and Carlos. (Carlos being a big brother figure at first and then to a father figure) they still kinda fond of Banica. They don't really hate her, they tolerate her at first before being fond of her. They still won't hesitate if they have to kill or cook her, no matter how much they like her, their royalty is with Carlos.
