Marie Barisol, later known as the Demon of Envy, was one of the demons residing in the vessels of sin and the mother of Behemo Barisol. Originally one of the survivors of the Second Period's destruction, she was sealed with her fellow kin in Sin before escaping and reincarnating as a demon. Taking dual blades as her vessel, the demon caused numerous incidents over the centuries to spread malice.
History[]
Early Life[]
In the Second Period, Marie Barisol became a psychiatrist and deputy director at Sickle Yggdra's clinic and research institute. Entertaining many, many lovers, she eventually had a son Behemo Barisol, though she never knew who the father was. After Behemo undertook his studies of the mind, Marie instructed him in the Swap Technique. As the Second Period began to collapse due to HERs contaminating the world, Marie and 71 other scientists, including Behemo, boarded one of several spaceships intended to travel to inhabitable planets and repopulate them, theirs under the name Climb One. On the Climb One, Marie romanced Salem Derais, an astrophysicist who entertained several other lovers.
As they lost contact with all their fellow spaceships, the crew of the Climb One realized they were the last inhabitants of Earth and decided to create a new species in the image of earthlings. After finding a new planet to inhabit, they set about constructing the new world and species. During this process Luna Twiright, a HER who had secretly boarded the Climb One, instigated the deaths of 62 of the crew members and contaminated the new species to have a possibility of developing HER Syndrome; included in these deaths were Salem' lovers, killed by Marie herself out of envy. The remaining crew, including Marie, proposed they reincarnate as gods into the world to guide the humans, unaware several among the crew were now themselves HERs.
When their colleagues Sickle Yggdra and Seth Hazuki disagreed, Marie joined the ensuing fight and was killed along with everyone else when it caused the Climb One to crash, leaving behind only her spirit data. Marie and her colleagues remained trapped in the Climb One for some time while the new species of humans began building their societies; eventually, the humans of Magic Kingdom Levianta discovered the Climb One and established it as a holy relic called the "Sin" ark.
Mantle of Envy[]
During the Levianta Catastrophe, Marie escaped the ark along with her fellow earthlings. She was thus drawn to Sickle's Forest, becoming a fish forest spirit, the only one to retain her memory. As time went on, she became dissatisfied with life in the forest and sought a way out. After Hänsel and Gretel killed their foster parents in EC 014, she gathered at the Moonlit house with Salem, Gilles Rahab, Eater, and Vlad. There, they reunited Luna and were offered vessels to inhabit as demons. Marie accepted the offer, and was thus reincarnated by Hänsel and Gretel's Re_birthday. Becoming the "Demon of Envy", Rahab inhabited a two swords. Afterwards, the demons and their vessels of sin were scattered across the world, armed with the knowledge of the sun god's rules for demons.
Changing Hands[]
Sometime during the EC 300s, the Levin Church gained ownership of the blades and stored them in Lucifenia. Centuries later in EC 501, church leader Mikhail Asayev delivered the blades to the blacksmith Langley in Lucifenian, requesting he destroy them. As Langley repeatedly attempted to destroy the blades using various methods, Marie mended the vessel every time. She eventually appeared to him in a dream, asking him to stop and explaining that she was in danger of being exploited by humans. Warned by Langley not to use the child of his employee Nagisa as an "escape route", Marie implored him to return the blades to Mikhail.
Wanting to avoid Kiril Clockworker, Marie possessed Mikhail in EC 508; under her influence, Mikhail formed Neo Apocalypse and launched numerous terrorist attacks across Holy Levianta. Following the Four Horsemen Incident, the Demon of Envy left Mikhail and returned to her vessel; around that time, Chartette Langley gained ownership of the blades. Unable to influence the carefree woman, Marie witnessed her vessel be reforged into two pairs of scissors in Jakoku and later sealed away in a cave by Gaou Octo in the middle of the sixth century EC.
At some point, Marie had a Prophetic Dream that a "pure evil" would bring about a true end when the twins Alexiel and Arina met. She thus formulated the flawed theory that, should Alexiel and Arina encounter each other, catastrophe would occur.
The Mermaid of Onigashima[]
Falling in love with the tailor Nagare Sudou in EC 821, Marie used the Swap Technique to exchange her vessel for the body of her guardian, Kagura Octo. Fleeing to Onigashima with the vessel in-hand, "Kagura" married Nagare Sudou and settled in Enbizaka, helping her husband with his tailor shop. The following year, the couple sired a daughter, naming her Gakuga. Around a decade later, Nagare died of disease, causing Marie to lose interest in the human world.
When Kayo Octo came by, the family permitted her to live with them. Noticing Kayo was pursuing a romance with Gakuga, the tailor revealed the two's relation as cousins and the couple insisted on continuing their relationship. Once Kayo and Gakuga married in January of EC 838, Marie decided to abandon her "human" life and fake her own death, leaving the Twin Blades of Levianta by the Onigashima cliff side before leaping into the sea and transforming into a mermaid.
Assumed dead, Marie observed her daughter's life from afar while traversing the sea, seeing Gakuga lose his family and sanity in the huge fire that struck Enbizaka at the end of the year; she also learned Arina Avadonia had reincarnated into Kokutan-musume to meet her brother Alexiel, who had reincarnated into Ren Miroku. Remembering her dream, she used her magic to keep Kokutan from regaining her memories of her past life.
With Kokutan-musume growing up pondering what her purpose was, she plotted to send her to Gakuga as a distraction and to try and save her son from madness. Approaching the girl, she told her that her life's purpose was to meet her real father, a purple-haired tailor in Onigashima, and instructed her to tell her that her name was "Rin".
After returning to the sea, Marie stayed by the reef and watched out for humans as Kokutan-musume traveled to meet Gakuga and move in with him. Following Gakuga's execution for the murders he committed, Fa approached Marie at the reef and confronted her over swapping Kagura into the scissors. After Marie explained how she had swapped into Kagura's body for love, and after the two discussed the implications of Gakuga being her son, she explained why she sent Kokutan-musume to Gakuga. She then, at Fa's command, transferred back into her vessel and set free Kagura's spirit. Nonetheless, she refused to let Fa use her and instead prepared to sleep until the end times.
World's End[]
Marie was later absorbed by Fa, her scissors left empty, and she resisted her will until she was set free when the mage was killed. After the Third Period's destruction and subsequent merging with the Hellish Yard in EC 999, Marie was tasked by Held with helping Arina Avadonia meet Gakuga Sudou.
With Arina ignoring Held's orders, Marie instead gathered with the other demons in Marlon, staying there with Kyle. With the Tasan Party soldiers on the hunt for some particular sin contractors, Marie speculated that they were targeting the contractors that were most compatible with their demons. When Alexiel and Germaine met with Kyle later on, Marie had to calm Salem when he became incensed at Alexiel's discussion with him, only to get offended by Alexiel, himself.
During the confrontation between Fa and Arina, Marie saw the dark clouds in the sky above Evil's Theater and suspected her prophetic dream about Arina and Alexiel reuniting had come true, discussing the dream with Vlad when he tried to refute it.
Personality and Traits[]
Befitting her role as a demon, Marie was an envious, selfish, and eccentric woman. Caring greatly about appearances, she was easily irritated by people misidentifying her. Similarly, although maintaining multiple lovers herself, she would become envious of any competition for their affection to the point of murder. She was thus ordinarily quick to violently punish those who offended her. Likewise, when faced with a difficult or potentially dangerous task, the Demon of Envy typically opted to avoid doing it if possible; compounding this passivity, Marie considered herself a pacifist.
At the time of taking her role as one of the demons for the vessels of sin, the Demon of Envy had no aspirations or goals save for sating her own boredom, the same as her fellow demons. Like the other Demons of Sin, the Demon found amusement in the inconvenience or suffering of others and thought nothing of stealing lives and hurting people for her own desires. Despite this, she was capable of maternal feelings and of actual love, however muted. She was also stubborn and refused to submit to someone else's will. Marie also wasn't fond of conversation, and was slow to censor herself when speaking.
Skills and Abilities[]
As a psychiatrist, Marie was extremely knowledgeable about the workings of the mind. Possessing immense magical power, Marie was capable of using the high-level Swap Technique to move her or others' souls into different bodies; she also possessed the prophetic dream ability. After reincarnating as a demon, Marie could also magically suppress an individual's memories while reincarnating. She was also apparently exempt from the rule of losing one's memories while reincarnating as a demon.
As a demon, Marie was capable of changing shape, transforming her body or even just parts of it into that of a fish. While in her full fish form, Marie was an incredibly fast swimmer, making her trips even quicker than one of the other demons' would by flying. She could also see long distances. As a downside, her aquatic forms couldn't remain out of the water for extended periods.
As a Demon of Sin, the Demon of Envy was able to possess those who wielded her vessel and influence their personality and actions, fueling their owner's jealousy and turning it into envy. If a contract was forged between an individual and the Demon, the Demon's host would have access to powers provided by the Demon, such as growing fish scales durable enough to deflect bullets. Marie could also communicate with her host through telepathy.
Although inhabiting the body of its host while possessing them, the Demon of Envy's true essence remained in the Twin Blades of Levianta. Because of this, the Demon's powers could be inhibited by a sealing spell; similarly, the demon was forced to abide by the "rules" put in place by Held until the end of the Third Period. Aside from her supernatural powers, Marie also possessed a beautiful and alluring speaking voice.
Character Connections[]
Held: A Climb One crew. Although originally fine with working with Held as a colleague, and willing to work with him at the world's end, Marie appeared to hold no particular loyalty to Held or his cause.
Salem Derais: One of Marie's lovers. On the Climb One Marie romanced Salem as she had done many men before; during this time, she became murderously jealous of any of his other lovers. Aside from that, the two seemed to get along amiably in their interactions after the end of the Third Period.
Behemo arisol: Marie's son. Despite their familial relationship, Marie and Behemo seemed to have a frosty relationship, Behemo embarrassed by his mother's promiscuous and eccentric nature while Marie became disappointed with Behemo's succeeding failures after the creation of the Third Period, as well as unwilling to return to being her subordinate.
Gakuga Sudou: Marie's son. Although only distantly, Marie appeared to care for Gakuga to an extent, wanting to at least see his get married before abandoning him; despite this abandonment, she still watched Gakuga's life from afar and, hoping to help Gakuga, sent Kokutan-musume his way.
Nagare Sudou: One of Marie's overs. Marie cared deeply for Nagare, moving into Kagura's body in order to be with him. After Nagare's death, she lost interest in human society.
