Chapter 4

Scene 1

  • In the coastal waters near Onigashima, there float a number of nameless, small islands.
  • They were closer to large rocks than islands, and no people lived there. Only fishing boats occasionally passed by.
  • By one of these small islands, there was a figure sitting atop a reef.
  • If you only looked at the top portion of her body, she seemed like a human woman. But her lower half didn’t have two feet, but instead clung to something similar to a tail and fins.
  • She was called a mermaid, and at the time was targeted by the humans.
  • One can become immortal by eating a mermaid’s flesh—who on earth spread nonsense rumors like that?
  • It’d been about five years since she’d started living here. In that time, no one had caught her, and calmly survived.
  • But—she felt that today might just be the day.
  • The mermaid’s vision was wide, and she could even see as far as where the humans are. Therefore, she can immediately know when fishing boats are approaching, and to this day no eyes have dangerously seen her.
  • More recently the trouble was the Freezis Firm’s boats. Unlike Jakokuese boats, the foreign boats had the advantage of being able to make tight turns quickly from far away. Naturally, the speed couldn’t stand up to the mermaid’s swimming speed, but they were still an opponent she couldn’t neglect.
  • However, it seemed that for some reason today they planned to leave the country. They’d prepared their largest ship to exit the harbor, and Perrie Cutie Marlon also seemed to be boarding that ship.
  • It seemed that soon it would return to calm days, and just now the mermaid felt relief.
  • But, it seemed that somehow her most troublesome opponent had noticed her existence.
  • The mermaid confirmed that a single woman was riding out to sea in a small boat.
  • There wasn’t a ferryman, and the woman didn’t seem to be rowing the boat.
  • In spite of this, the boat was steadily advancing.
  • She didn’t know whether or not it was possible to escape. But if that woman was enough to be worried about, perhaps she could even surpass the mermaid’s swimming speed.
  • If they fought—without a doubt it would end with the mermaid’s defeat. To the mermaid’s knowledge, that woman is the master of the most powerful power on the ground (world).
  • It wasn’t too likely she would use that power. However, it was feared that she wouldn’t hesitate to use that power against the mermaid.
  • The mermaid simply continued to wait for the woman’s arrival.

Scene 2

  • “—Long time no see.”
  • The boat had reached the reef.
  • The woman got down from the boat, stepping onto a nearby rock, and said this to the mermaid.
  • The woman and the mermaid recognized each other.
  • It was a reunion after centuries. But both of them had taken completely different forms.
  • The mermaid, still sitting on the reef, looked up at the woman and greeted her back.
  • “Hello… what should I call you now?”
  • “Call me what you like.”
  • “Elluka… Irina… Eve, or perhaps ‘MA’. —But the first time you came before my eyes it was ‘Levia’.”
  • One of the Twin Gods: Levia.
  • That was one of the components that made up Elluka Ma Clockworker’s mind.
  • The being that was her was born from a fusion of a few different personalities. The general term for it was “MA”, and “MA” inherited all the memories of her component personalities before the fusion.
  • That’s why the mermaid calling her “Levia” wasn’t a mistake.
  • “Levia, eh… other than you there’s probably no person on the ground who would call me that.”
  • “Heh, You haven't been yourself lately? You will be soon.” [Rough]
  • “Behemo? …I haven’t been talking to him, and he hasn’t addressed me. We haven’t been communicating. That’s why I don’t know why he’s appeared, and I don’t care. If he was in my way it would be different, but it doesn’t seem like he will.” [Paraphrased first part]
  • “You’re intimate siblings.”
  • “—That guy has the golden key Grim the End. I wonder if it didn’t have any influence on you?”
  • As the mermaid laughed lightly, she shook her tail a little.
  • “I’m not that meager. … Unlike the one in those scissors you have.”
  • “As I thought, the one who imprisoned Kagura in these scissors—was you.”
  • The mermaid laughed again.
  • “Those two pairs of scissors—were once twin swords. Those were changed into their current form about three hundred years ago by a single woman.”
  • “… Chartette Langley. The woman who took the name ‘Saruteito’ in this country. She cast a seal that prevented the Demons of Sin from exercising their power. Due to that, I—both Elluka and Irina, turned a blind eye to it without being able to find it.”
  • “The ones who knew that the Twin Blades of Levianta had become the Dual Scissors were Chartette herself, and a man named Gaou Octo. Gaou, entrusted with the scissors by Chartette, sealed them in a cavern on Onigashima, and wouldn’t even show them to his friends and family.”
  • “That’s why both the descendants of Chartette and Gaou are convinced the blades are still swords. Even I hadn’t realized this until recently—but… ”
  • Elluka, standing there, continued to speak.
  • “A couple of decades ago, I finally figured out you were here in Jakoku. I didn’t know why then, but I do now. … Back then, you imprisoned Kagura within the scissors, and in her stead slipped out. You used the opportunity to take Kagura’s body and got a form in the ground world—that’s what happened right, Demon of Envy!”
  • “The Swap Technique—it isn’t just you who can do it, right? Levia.”
  • “That’s true. It was you who taught it to me in the first place.”
  • A wave crashed against the reef, and the spray of water landed on both of them.
  • Neither of them cared, and continued to talk.
  • “Demon of Envy—why did you take Kagura’s body and a human form? You’ve been docile for centuries.”
  • “… Can’t demons fall in love with human men?”
  • “You… couldn’t have done it just because you wanted to be tied to Nagare Sudou… for only that reason— “
  • The mermaid started laughing even more loudly than before.
  • “Hahaha. That’s true. Do you have any complaints?”
  • “You… are still a slut… that hasn’t changed.”
  • “Kagura Octo was the most suitable for my new body. That beauty, the high magic potential—I took her body, eloped with Nagare, and started a new life as ‘Kagura Sudou’.”
  • “And then—Kayo was born. She wasn’t a contractor—she was a demon’s daughter.”
  • This time the mermaid sighed with a disappointed looking face.
  • “Considering all your failures thus far, it’d be wrong of me not to say you’re incompetent, Levia. While swapping bodies with Kayo, you hadn’t realized it until now… a demon’s knowledge lives in the mind. So it might not be completely unreasonable for you, who only swapped her body, to not realize that until now.”
  • “Kayo’s body was originally Kagura’s… that is to say she’s the daughter of a normal human. But, inheriting demon’s knowledge from you, she could use supernatural powers.”
  • Then, one could hear a voice from the scissors in Elluka’s bosom.
  • (Um… why did Kayo grow to see those prophetic dreams?)
  • Elluka answered.
  • “The Purple Dream is a special case. That power rests not in the mind, but in the body. Behemo would know a lot about that but—well, I’m not going to start talking about that guy who’s not even here right now.”
  • As the two were speaking, before they knew it the mermaid’s body was transforming.
  • The lower half was no longer a fish’ tail and fins, but rather human legs like Elluka’s.
  • “You two get along well, eh?”
  • The mermaid—the Demon of Envy poked fun at Elluka and Kagura.
  • “I don’t know if we get along well. But at least we both seem to hate you—speaking of, you’ve reverted to the form of a normal human being.”
  • “Naturally. I lived in this form for sixteen years as Kagura Sudou.”
  • “… Why would you disappear in front of Kayo, and become a mermaid?”
  • “The earlier I disappeared, the better. Since I had lost my interest in the human world since Nagare died. But, I thought I would see my daughter’s… Kayo’s wedding first.”
  • Elluka ground her teeth angrily.
  • “— Do you want to say your feelings as a parent welled up? Ha, I can’t believe that at all.”
  • “People… change, Levia.”
  • “Shut up. You aren’t a person to begin with, but a demon… I have one more question about Kayo.”
  • “As ever, you like to ask people questions, Levia. The attitude of pursuing everything is good.”
  • “Why did you direct Kokutan-douji—Allen to Kayo’s side?”
  • “I didn’t decide it because of that. It was so he wouldn’t meet his other fragment. If I let him be, he would eventually remember his purpose and head towards his other fragment. I thought I would give Kayo as a scapegoat before that happened. … I didn’t predict that the other fragment lived in Enbizaka, same as Kayo. Once I’d realized that even I got a little cold sweat.”
  • “… As I thought, you have no feelings as a parent. Didn’t you just use Kayo as a tool!”
  • Elluka jumped from the rock she was standing on, approaching the Demon of Envy.
  • “… I had other expectations. Perhaps he—he who is ‘irregular’, would save Kayo. I was half wrong and half right. He couldn’t prevent Kayo’s destruction, but her heart, at least a little, was saved by Allen.”
  • “What’s your reason for stopping Allen and Riliane from meeting? … I still haven’t heard about that.”
  • "Yeah… I still find living in this world to be a little fun. It would trouble me if it ended.”
  • Elluka pointed the two scissors at the smiling demon.
  • “While it’s regrettable, your fun life ends here. You’ll return to these scissors again, for me.”
  • “… Well I thought you’d come for this purpose, but, if I were to resist, I probably wouldn’t win.”
  • “If you thought that, get in here now.”
  • “— I want to say one last thing. Even if I return to those, I have no plans at all of obeying you. I’m going to sleep for a long time. The final day isn’t that far away—"
  • “Demon of Envy Rahab Barisol. The one who was once Levia’s subordinate, and her mother—I command you under the name of MA! Return to your vessel!!”
  • In that instant, both the scissors and the demon’s body glowed.
  • And then quietly, the demon was drawn into the scissors.
  • “… I wonder if that turned out well?”
  • Elluka, still holding the scissors, looked up into the empty space above her.
  • “Kagura-san. Are you there?”
  • And then, Kagura’s voice resounded back.
  • (… Yes. It seems I was able to leave the scissors without a hitch. By swapping with the demon.)
  • “Oh… if I think about it more clearly, there wasn’t a need to draw her body into the scissors too. If that was still here, your soul could return there again.”
  • (Originally, I had no such plans either… Anyhow, I’d always thought that I’d already died.)
  • “That’s fine. Well, for a little while, wander around as a ghost. The Heavenly Yard will receive you, but— “
  • “If that’s the case, won’t you come with me, Kagura-san?”
  • Someone talked from behind Elluka.
  • “Who!?”
  • Turning around, the one who was there was—Behemo.
  • “How long have you been there— “
  • Behemo ignored Elluka, looking above her head and addressing the space there.
  • [Picture of the Demon of Envy and MA]
  • “I’m also just about to return to the Heavenly Yard. If it’s okay I’ll bring you along with me.”
  • (Ah… Bufuko-san… who on earth are you?)
  • “Me? I’m—God.”
  • (The Heavenly Yard… or Sukhavati, right? Well, I have no reason to refuse, but— )
  • “Is that right? Well, shall we go?”
  • Behemo’s body floated in midair.
  • He moved to above Elluka’s head, and gestured as if he were holding something— .
  • Like that, he flew in the direction of Onigashima.
  • Elluka, left all alone, loitered there with a dumbfounded face.
  • “That bastard… he left completely ignoring me.”
  • Then, her eyes fell upon the scissors she was holding.
  • “… Well, for now I was able to achieve my goal.”
  • Then, she saw the ships anchored at Onigashima’s harbor.
  • “It’s about time that the ships leave. I wonder if I should return, too.”
  • Elluka boarded the small boat she arrived in, and set out using magic.

Scene 3

  • “It looks like you’ve already from Grim the End’s influence, eh?”
  • Behemo, flying through the air, addressed Kagura, whom he was holding.
  • (Grim the End… is it that golden key?)
  • “Yes. Right after Kayo-san died it rampaged, flying off to who knows where—well, at least it’s better than I expected.”
  • (… But, how could Bufuko-san be God?)
  • Kagura was reminded of a poor boy who had a crush on Bufuko-san.
  • (Inukichi-kun, he must be depressed, no… )
  • “It was an unrealizable love anyway. I’m a man to begin with.”
  • (Oh my… the truth is getting increasingly sad for Inukichi-kun, no?)
  • “All your hard work is appreciated, Kagura-san. Wasn’t it hard to watch over Kayo, who wasn’t even your daughter?”
  • (I… didn’t do anything… for that)
  • “Hm?”
  • (For example, even if the one who birthed Kayo was a demon—to me Kayo is… a daughter.)
  • “Hm? If you think that, isn’t it all fine?”
  • The two of them continued to fly through the air.
  • (By the way, Bufuko-san… I noticed we’re currently heading towards Onigashima. I always thought Sukhavati was on the other side of the sky— )
  • “Ah… actually, there’s one more person coming with us. We’re heading towards him right now.”
  • (Kayo… as I thought can’t go to Sukhavati, right?)
  • “While it’s regrettable, Kayo killed people. That—wasn’t because of her—but Kayo san was born a person with the karma of the Deadly Sins. The Heavenly Yard can’t accept her.”
  • (… )
  • “The destination of Kayo-san’s soul is—Hell.”
  • Behemo, finally reaching the sky above Onigashima, flew towards Enbizaka’s execution grounds with *Kagura.
  • Kokutan-douji was waiting there for them.
