Mukoku[note 1] was a state in the Bolganio continent's Akuna region. Collapsing several centuries after its foundation, the country continued to exist centuries later, eventually entering a state of turmoil.

Foundation and Collapse[]

Sometime after the Levianta Catastrophe, the kingdom of Mukoku was founded by the Li Family. At some point, a great wall was built along the country's borders;[1] later on, the kingdom collapsed.[2] Around the 6th century EC, the reigning king declared that only natives were allowed to pass through the nation's border wall.[1] The nation continued to exist by the EC 900s,[3] later entering into a state of turmoil.[4]

World's End[]

In EC 999, Mukoku was completely decimated by Punishment. Following the end of the Third Period, the destruction site merged with the Hellish Yard along with the rest of the ground world.[5]

Government and Politics[]

Power Structure[]

Before and after its collapse, Mukoku's government functioned as a monarchy, with a monarch presiding over the state. Before the nation's collapse, the reigning monarch was powerful enough to order the construction of large structures. Following Mukoku's collapse, the monarchy still had a considerable amount of influence over the nation's policies.[1]

Mukoku's military included guards who were stationed along its border wall. Said guards on one occasion wielded large axes and were clad in green and red armor.[1]

Mukoku had enough manpower and resources to construct and maintain a large wall. Mukoku's economy was also sufficient enough to maintain itself without the physical presence of foreign traders within the nation's borders. Despite this development, the roads leading to its borders were rough and unpaved.[1]

Society and Culture[]

Mukoku as a nation exhibited a strict policy of isolationism, ostensibly for the protection of their homeland from foreigners. Despite this, the kingdom suffered a collapse and,[1] late in its history, suffered political strife.[4]

The Mukokuese were characterized by their medium-toned skin, black hair and black eyes; their intolerance of foreigners resulted in racial homogeneity within the nation. Because of this homogeneity, a typical citizen could easily distinguish foreigners from natives.[1] At some point, Mukoku was regarded as the "Great Kingdom of the East".[6] Because of its isolation, Mukoku was considered one of the unexplored kingdoms of the East by the 6th century EC.[7]

Geography and Climate[]

Located in the Akuna region, Mukoku was east of the Evillious region and west of Jakoku. Separated by an ocean from the latter, Mukoku was relatively near its neighbor. The land around the country's borders had a flat and rocky terrain.[1]

Great Wall[]

A massive wall built along Mukoku's borders. Commissioned by the government, it continued to exist after the nation's collapse, with border guards stationed along the wall. It maintained at least one gate.[1]

A coastline on the eastern side of the country. It was close enough to Jakoku that the nation could be seen on the horizon.[1]

Conceptualization and Origin[]

  • Mukoku parallels the real world nation of China; Mukoku's culture and appearance bears many similarities with that of the closed country policy of the Ming and Qing dynasties, while also being ruled by a Li family like in the Tang dynasty.
  • Similarly, Mukoku's "Great Wall" parallels the Great Wall of China, which was also established to keep out foreign invaders.
  • Mukoku's name is written in Japanese kanji as 無国, literally meaning "nothing land"; this may be a reference to the song The Journey of Two Mages ~Great Wall and Watchman~, where Gumillia notes there is nothing on the other side of the wall.
