"She's likely still at Kiji-san's place."
―Rin Miroku[src]

Miku Miroku was a member of the Miroku Family in Jakoku and the daughter of Kai and Mei. Following the great fire that struck Enbizaka, Miku fell in love with Kiji Yarera, dating the Elphe despite her father's disapproval.

History

Early Life

"Fortunately, our home wasn't affected by the fire since we're across the street from the river but my husband was slightly burned."
―Mei[src]

Born in EC 826, Miku was raised by Kai and Mei Miroku alongside her younger sister Rin in Enbizaka, Jakoku. As she grew up, Miku occasionally pitched in with the family's dry goods business.[1] When a great fire struck Enbizaka in EC 838, she and her mother and sister remained at home while the fire ravaged the main town on the other side of the river; shortly after, the family discovered the back of Kai's left hand was severely burned.[2]

During the reconstruction efforts following the fire, Miku met Kiji Yarera of the Yarera-Zusco Firm. Falling in love with the Elphe, the two eventually began dating despite Kai's disapproval, regularly visiting Kiji.[3] As the reconstruction of Enbizaka reached its closure, Miku learned her mother had the Freezis Foundation rebuild the Sudou Tailor Shop and replace all its furniture and tools from memory for her good friend, Kayo Sudou.[4] On her sixteenth birthday, Miku received a gray kimono from Kai.[5]

Return of the Tailor

"But it'd be inconvenient in a lot of ways since the inside of the house's completely empty."
"That is true."
"So without telling you, we asked the Freezis Foundation firm to prepare some household goods in advanced for you."
―Miku and Kayo Sudou[src]

In winter of EC 842, Mei sent the girl to receive Kayo Sudou outside her newly rebuilt tailor shop, explaining she was busy. Miku abided and waited until she saw the woman approach and then instintively hide her face from her. Inquiring why, Miku listened to Kayo explain that it was because her face was ugly from burns. Ignoring the beautiful woman, she introduced herself. When Kayo asked if she was Mei's daughter, Miku confirmed the fact and why she came instead of her mother. When the tailor then asked why she dropped by, the young girl explained that Mei was worried since the woman was coming back for the first time in four years.

Hearing the tailor comment on the new shop's beauty, she noted the inconvenience of an empty house. She then explained how they asked for the foundation's assistance while leading her inside; as the tailor oggled the new furniture and tools, Miku explained how their family helped as drapers, qualifying that what tools her mother recalled might not have been exactly the same. Met with Kayo's gratitude while she continued half-hiding her face, Miku admitted she was just giving her the message and politely asked she give her thanks to the foundation for financing it. After agreeing she'd do so and had errands to run there anyway, Miku nodded and excused herself. [6]

Enbizaka Murders

"That day, Miku went to take an order at the Freezis Trading House; that was before evening... Well, I guess it was difficult coming home."
―Uibee[src]

After Mei's corpse was found on main street, Miku grieved the death of her mother. She then began taking up her mother's role in the draper business and running errands to collect and deliver clients' orders for her father, often dealing with Perrié Cutie Marlon at the Freezis Trading House. Around that time, Miku and Kiji made love and became pregnant; once she discovered her pregnancy with Kiji's child, the teen shared the fact with her lover and he agreed to marry her. During the same period, Miku expressed her frustration with the Magistrate's office to Kiji, claiming the investigators were incompetent for not being any close to catching her mother's killer.

Several months later, after Kiji left to report the matter to his parents, Miku walked with her father toward Twin Mirror Bridge while wearing the kimono Kai gifted her and revealed her pregnancy. Met with Kai's outrage, the girl left to take an order from the Freezis Trading House. During her meeting with Perrié, Miku shared the recent events with the woman before leaving. Unwilling to go back to her father, the teen avoided going home the rest of the day. Encountering Kayo Sudou alone late that night, the girl was repeatedly stabbed in the stomach and died shortly after.[7]

Legacy

"A corpse came up the river."
"Oh my... did someone get drunk and drown?"
―Oyuka and Kayo[src]

Following Miku's murder, Kayo took her obi retailored it for herself. Her corpse was found washed up on the river bank the next morning. Constable Uibee and Detective Eikichi investigated the case afterward, noticing the differences between Miku and her mother's murders. The constable later informed Kai of Miku's death and the remaining father and daughter grieved. When asked about her help with the shop, Kai expressed his gratitude for everything his daughter did for them in place of her mother. When Constable Uibee later attempted to question Kiji, he recalled her words about the magistrate office's incompetence, swearing he would find and kill the murderer himself.[8]

Afterward, many officers, detectives, and employees of the Yarera-Zusco Firm investigated Miku and her mother's deaths to no avail. Kayo later murdered Miku's sister Rin, wearing all three women's articles of clothing while confronting Kai before murdering him shortly before her arrest. When asked why she had murdered the women while on trial, Kayo claimed it was because they were in an affair with her husband.[9] When Gakusha asked about Kayo's gibbeted head days after her execution, the monk was told about her ghastly murder of Miku and the other Mirokus.[10]

Personality and Traits

"My daughter never helped with the house work that much, but since the thing with Mei, she's seem to be concerned about me and her sister Rin and has been aggressively doing her best in Mei's place. Even though she's probably depressed about her mother's death herself... I'm grateful for that."
―Kai regarding Miku[src]

Miku was a rebellious but compassionate girl towards those she loved.[11] While rarely helping around the family shop and preferring to have fun in town, the girl still acted polite and cordial with strangers.[12] Beloved by her family, the girl was particularly respectful towards her mother, willing to help Mei when needed. After her mother's death, the teen showed great concern for her family; she similarly demonstrated a strong will in taking up Mei's responsibilities in her place while remaining upbeat despite her personal grief over the tragedy. Regardless, Miku felt frustrated by the Izasa Magistrate's office's failure to find the murderer, considering them all incompetent.[13]

In contrast, Miku developed a strained relationship with Kai, openly dating a foreigner despite his disapproval.[14] However, with Mei's death, the two reconciled to some extent as the family worked to get past the tragedy. Regardless, she held a deep infatuation with Kiji, often talking with him and sharing her personal frustrations. After accepted marrying Kiji and birthing his child, earning renewed friction with Kai. Struggling to deal with his passionate anger over her pregnancy, the girl refused to even return home to face her father again, ultimately leading to her own demise.[15]

Skills and Abilities

Miku was decent at business, helping out in her family's clothing shop and running errands for her mother when able. She was also a capable speaker, able to clearly convey information while maintaining a warm and polite demeanor.[16] However, the teen lacked any apparent physical ability, leaving her completely helpless when facing an armed killer.[17]
