The great Magic Kingdom Levianta,[note 1] otherwise referred to as just Levianta,[note 2] was a state in the Bolganio continent's Evillious region. Once an advanced society of magic and legacy technology, the Magic Kingdom Levianta dominated northern Evillious before the Levianta Catastrophe wiped it out entirely.

History[]

Early History[]

Early in the Third Period, many humans began gathering in the north of Evillious, eventually settling what would be known as the country of Levianta.[1] The humans there eventually discovered the white ark Sin that had been buried beneath the earth there. With a handful of humans hearing the voices of the twin gods Levia-Behemo trapped inside the relic, the Leviantans sealed the device in a temple and worshiped their deities through it, establishing the Levin faith.[2]

Sometime later, a group of Evillious mages discovered the numerous Second Period super technologies buried beneath the ground in this region, which streamlined the use of magic. Led by a woman named Alice, they began excavating these technologies, including those that were housed in the temple, establishing a walled fortress around the temple when they faced resistance from local worshipers. Eventually, the fortress became the city of Alicegrad in the new Kingdom of Levianta, with Alice making herself the queen. To appease the worshipers in the region, Alice established Levia-Behemo as the deities of the new country and formed a council of six mage families and six local families to help rule.[3]

Over time, with numerous magic families flocking to the new nation,[4] the kingdom became among the most magically and technologically advanced nation in Evillious,[5] rivaling the great Tasan Empire.[6] Upon Alice's death, her daughter inherited her position and assumed her mother's name, establishing a tradition of each Leviantan queen being named "Alice Merry-Go-Round."[3]

After the nation of Heldogort broke off from the kingdom, worshiping the dragon god Held in its pantheon, the Magic Kingdom Levianta severely repressed its neighboring country.[7] Following the fifth queen of Levianta being unable to bear children, the hereditary position of queen was abolished and new queens were instead selected by the senate.[8]

Prophesied Destruction[]

Around BT 005, the seventh Queen Alice Merry-Go-Round prophesied that Sin would lead to the country's destruction and that the twin gods must be incarnated as humans to purify the ark and prevent their end. The Leviantan Senate then secretly established Project 'Ma' to artificially produce the twin gods' human incarnations.[5] Following numerous applications, Eve Zvezda was selected for the project.[9] Shortly after, Eve failed to produce living twins and fled with the project director, Adam Moonlit.

The country came into turmoil following this when the head of the military, Gammon Loop Octopus, launched a coup on the increasingly corrupt senate.[10] As a result, all members of the senate were replaced and Alice Merry-Go-Round's prophecy was made public.[11] With this, Seth Twiright took over the second Project 'Ma' and selected Meta Salmhofer as the test subject.[12] Following the successful births of Hänsel and Gretel, Prophet Merry-Go-Round established the Evillious Calendar in commemoration and the kingdom celebrated; Meta fled with the twins soon after, making the project a failure.[13]

In the following years, new projects were established and either failed or were suspended. In EC 013, the Senate selected Irina Clockworker for the seventh project and was celebrated as the new Queen.[14] Around six months later,[15] Kiril Clockworker activated the ark Sin and the device went out of control, causing an explosion. Afterward, the freed dragon Levia-Behemo rampaged through the skies, reducing the Magic Kingdom Levianta into a ruined wasteland.[2]

Government and Politics[]

Power Structure[]

The Magic Kingdom was a constitutional monarchy, with the ruler of the government restrained by that of the senate.[16] The senate, formed by the political leaders of Levianta's twelve capital cities, would meet in the Round Hall in Alicegrad to discuss matters of state. They were also responsible for handing down the queen's decrees to the public. By the time of the first Project, the senate was made up of leaders from the Loop Octopus, Li, Idora, Qina, Vaju, and Asayev families, among others.[17]

Although originally a hereditary position, the queens of Levianta were later selected among the magically gifted as brought forward by the senate. This led to routine power struggles in the kingdom, with senators vying to elevate their positions by producing the most magically potent candidates themselves. Furthermore, the head of the senate was the only one allowed to meet with the queen in person. This system of government gave way to corruption, as well as inaction towards larger problems like the terrorist organization Apocalypse,[8] leading to political upheavals nearing its decline.[10]

Leviantan queens also acted as spiritual leaders of the country, conveying prophecies based on the will of the gods and positioned in the Levia-Behemo temple during their rule. Selection of the next queen involved dangerous rituals, and those in power as queen were capable of making broad religious decrees.[8] This spiritual role came with restrictions, however, as the queen of Levianta was required to never take a husband and to remain "pure", restrictions presumably passed after the hereditary line of royalty was abolished.[17]

Military[]

The magic kingdom had a capable military. Their actions were overseen by that of the senate and carried out to their wishes.[12] Armaments included firearms such as small but powerful revolvers. The power of the military eventually became such that it took over the government in a coup during the tumultuous Project 'Ma' period.[18]

Economy[]

Due to its heavy reliance on magical technology, scientists, engineers and artisans were a necessary trade in the Magic Kingdom. Among the latter, clockworkers were especially popular for creating and repairing the local magic tools.[2] Another profession in the Magic Kingdom were excavators known as "Mogura", who dug up the sites of old technology from the Second Period in various regions of the kingdom, bringing further income to the local businesses as they did.

The bulk of the Magic Kingdom's advances were based entirely on studying these excavated technologies of the Second Period, known as "legacy pieces,"[8] which could typically only be operated with magic.[17] This heavy reliance on legacy pieces severely stunted Levianta's own advancements, to a point where glass, particularly colored glass, was a luxury item as it could only be made by a legacy piece. Thanks to these advancements, Levianta also had access to automobiles powered by magic over horsepower, although these as well were were notably expensive.[8]

Society and Culture[]

The Magic Kingdom Levianta was built upon its great magical and technological prowess, developed from having the vast majority of magic-aligned clans under its banner.[19] Because of this, magic held a great importance in their society, with individuals given ranks based on their magical abilities.[20] In a similar manner, only those with certain magical power were eligible for some positions in the government or its projects. Conversely, although not outright persecuted, those with weak magical potential had difficulty advancing in life and were seen as not being favored by the gods.[8] The nation also had a noble class with aristocrats having a great influence in the political affairs of the Magic Kingdom, particularly because of their affluence.[2]

Racially, Leviantans were a diverse people, with many different characteristics found among them. Despite this, the vast population of mages were regarded as being extremely beautiful even a century after the original kingdom fell. After Levianta's destruction, several Leviantans survived although it is unknown whether or not they died out in the following centuries.[21]

Founded around Sin, the precepts and ideas of Levin were deeply rooted in Leviantan culture, with the twin gods, Levia-Behemo considered the absolute twin deities in their faith.[1] Among the religious beliefs of Levianta was the belief that all were God's children.[22] The religious zeal of the Levia-Behemo faith, however, led to the intense persecution of followers of Held in Heldogort and Held himself being labeled as an evil deity.[2] Similarly, fear of those with Hereditary Evil Raiser Syndrome led to a desire for their complete eradication,[23] and Leviantan society became increasingly worried over government corruption and the destruction of their kingdom following Maria Moonlit's prophecy.[18]

Due to the invention of the television, media reporters spread news quickly to viewers across the Magic Kingdom and kept them updated on important political or societal affairs within the country. Like with most technology and culture, these devices were lost with the kingdom's destruction.[24]

Geography and Climate[]

Levianta was a northern region of Evillious, located directly above Lucifenia and Asmodean with territory extending into what was later known as Elphegort. Originally, the Magic Kingdom consisted of flora and fauna, with the southern portion containing part of Held's Forest.[3] The climate was also much cooler and would snow during cold weather.[25] Compounding this, the nation experienced long winters and short summers.[26] In the wake of the Magic Kingdom's destruction, a large portion of the forested areas in the southern part of the country disappeared, and the country became a barren wasteland and was inhospitable, with the ruins stretching as far as Asmodean.[27] Eventually, the area became hospitable again and it was made possible to resettle.[28]

Locations[]

Royal Research Institute[]

The Royal Research Institute was a laboratory in Asmouse. It was founded by Senator Ceci Vaju with Horus Solntse as its head during the reign of Levianta's sixth queen. Its aim was researching the use of Second Period artifacts, producing various inventions and contributing greatly to the country's engineering. The Institute also underwent the Next Queen Project in order to artificially produce the next Queen of Levianta. After said project was repurposed into Project Ma, the Research Institute mobilized its research staff for expeditions to locate magically-talented individuals such as Meta Salmhofer and Eve Zvezda.[8]

Levia-Behemo Temple[]

The Levia-Behemo Temple[note 3] was a place of worship for Levia-Behemo, located in Alicegrad in the northwest part of Levianta.[29] The ark Sin was sealed inside the temple, and it was also the location of the queens of Levianta.[8] Due to the danger of Sin, those suspected of malicious intent were banned from the temple.[2] It was destroyed in the Levianta Catastrophe, though its ruins continued to exist even in the 10th century EC.[30]

Lighwatch[]

Lighwatch[note 4] was a religious institution run by the Asayev Family, which held a position of power in the senate as one of the means of selecting new Leviantan queens. As part of this, the temple conducted research into the source of Inheritor abilities,[31] and raised priestesses found to be Inheritors of Held.[3]

Welvya[]

Welvya[note 5] was a city in the Magic Kingdom. A prostitution business existed there.[2] It was destroyed in the Levianta Catastrophe.

Alicegrad[]

Alicegrad[note 7] was the site of the Magic Kingdom Levianta's Levia-Behemo temple, set in the center of the twelve royal capitals as the political heart of the kingdom. Originally a set of walls made to protect the Levia-Behemo temple, the area was built up over time into a fortress and then a sprawling castle city as more people gravitated to it.[17]

Nemu[]

Nemu[note 8] was a village of powerful magic users located in the southern forest region of the Magic Kingdom Levianta. Following an attack by Apocalypse the village's inhabitants were slaughtered,[8] and travel through the region was eventually prohibited. It was also noted as having the strongest magical atmosphere in Evillious.[33]
