Ma, also known by the names of Elluka Clockworker, Kayo Sudou, the Gardener and the Sorceress of Time, was a powerful mage. Born in the wake of the Duel of Merrigod Plateau, Ma manipulated Kayo Sudou, Gallerian Marlon, and others throughout the centuries, on a quest to collect the vessels of sin and become a "pure" being. After Gallerian's untimely death, she took up residence in Evil's Theater, using the inhabitants for her ambitions.

History

Early Life

After the souls of Levia Barisol, Eve Moonlit, and Irina Clockworker were fused into one in Lukana Octo's body on January 30, EC 611, the new entity awoke in Pale Noël's tomb. Overwhelmed by the memories and magic of three different lives, she realized she needed a new body; unable to use Germaine Avadonia's due to it rapidly aging, she left the chamber and wandered into Merrigod Plateau. There she quickly discovered she was unable to conjure magic and would one day be unable to use hypnosis and eventually the Swap Technique.

Determining she had about two or three centuries to find a new body, the woman pondered her new identity. She decided to use the alias "Elluka Clockworker", while her true name would be "Ma" due to all three of her souls having once sought to become the Ma. With her public and true identity realized, Ma continued traveling.

In EC 776, Ma visited Maistia and helped quell the natives' rebellion shortly before the continent declared its independence and formed the United States of Maistia. During her travels, she gained a reputation for saving many minds in both Maistia and Evillious. During the EC 800s, Ma befriended Perrié Cutie Marlon of the Freezis Foundation, using the name "Elluka 'Ma' Clockworker".

Pretending to be a Levin missionary, she boarded one of the Freezis Foundation's merchant ships and traveled to Enbizaka, Jakoku in EC 842, where she resided in the Freezis trade house. There she became acquainted with the new employee, Anan Octo, and learned that Enbizaka had been destroyed by a great fire before recently being rebuilt. During her time in Onigashima, Ma researched the history of the do-gooder Kokutan-douji, among other stories, compiling his information to be published in a book called the "Eastern Magic Record".

A New Body

Three days after arriving in Jakoku, Ma walked out of the trade house with Anan and met his cousin, Kayo Sudou, whom she recognized to be a descendant of Lukana Octo. Talking with her in the drawing room, Ma noted that Kayo was under the delusion that she was still burnt from the fire. As they talked, Anan explained to Kayo "Elluka's" reputation for saving minds in Evillious and Maistia, and Ma impressed Kayo with her beauty and fluency in Jakokuese. The conversation then fell to Perrié, who wasn't as fluent, and from her to the Freezis foundation and its competition with the Yarera-Zusco Firm.

Ma swaps bodies with Kayo

After moving on from the topic of the fire, Ma sent Anan away and confirmed how Kayo was troubled by her nonexistent burns. Knowing she could regain her magical ability easily with Kayo's body, she decided to perform the Body Swap Technique and take Kayo's body for herself. She then hypnotized Kayo to agree to meeting with her at her tailor shop in three days' time.

On the appointed day, Ma arrived to Kayo and explained to the tailor her lineage to Lukana Octo and Sateriasis Venomania, as well as claiming that she was using Lukana's body, herself. Demonstrating her magical abilities, Ma revealed how she was a centuries-old witch, claiming she came to Jakoku to return Lukana's body to one of her descendants. As she suggested swapping bodies with her, Ma tried to convince Kayo by pointing out her "burns" would no longer trouble her and that she'd be happy with her new visage and able to move on from her family's death.

Kayo then admitted to Ma her fear of herself due to her extreme fits of envy towards others' lovers and families; taking up the opportunity, Ma claimed that she was likely possessed by the Demon of Envy and suggesting swapping bodies could exorcise it. At Kayo's insistence, Ma performed the Swap Technique and was pleased to have a body of Kayo's magical talent. Afterward, she spotted Kayo's scissors, the vessel of envy, but decided to leave them for now. After leaving the shop, Ma hypnotized the rest of Enbizaka into thinking that she and Kayo had always had their current appearances.

The Tale of Enbizaka

Wanting to regain her full power before dealing with the Demon of Envy, Ma began confining herself to bed, feigning sickness. Later that year, Ma was visited by Kokutan-douji and conversed with him late into the night, sharing her speculation that that the mermaid had lied and Kayo wasn't his mother at all. Following Kayo's execution, Ma visited Kayo's tailor shop and found that the Demon of Envy wasn't in the scissors after all, but a human woman, who unbeknownst to her was Kagura Octo, was inside them instead. As Ma talked with the soul and claimed she intended to erase her, she persuaded Kagura to tell her the entire story of what she had witnessed with Kayo and Enbizaka.

Ma listened as the soul explained the whole story of Kayo's family, her loss, her illness, her murders, her meeting with Kokutan-douji, and her execution, with Ma occasionally giving input and discussing details of the story. As she did, she took notes on the incident to include it in her Eastern Magic Record. Following the end of their conversation, with Ma learned that the human hadn't been able to witness Kayo's execution due to the interference from Grim the End.

Then, rather than erasing Kagura, Ma revealed that she had discovered her true identity and she took the scissors out to confront the true Demon of Envy, Rahab Barisol. She went out to the reef where Rahab waited in her "mermaid" form and confronted her, as the mother of her Levia personality and as the one who had swapped Kagura into the scissors. As they quarreled, Ma learned how Rahab had swapped Kagura into the scissors in order to have a romance with Nagare Sudou, making Kayo literally the daughter of the Demon of Envy and explaining why she had envy magic within her.

Ma also learned how Rahab had sent Kokutan-douji to Kayo to prevent him from meeting Rin Miroku as well as to help Kayo. After their chilly confrontation, Ma demanded Rahab return to her original vessel, scissors, and the demon returned, sucking Kagura's body inside the vessel as well. As Kagura was finally freed from the vessel, albeit disembodied, Ma apologized for not letting her return to her own body. The two were interrupted by Behemo, who, to Ma's consternation, pointedly ignored her and offered to give Kagura a lift to the Heavenly Yard. Behemo and Kagura departed, and Ma left with the scissors to once again travel the world.

To Become Pure

During her travels, Ma came to understand the world and its workings well enough to realize that it would be coming to an end soon. With this understanding, Ma decided to become a being "pure" and powerful enough to survive the world's end. She determined to do this by absorbing the seven so-called "demons of sin" and by expelling her constituent personalities into other bodies. With the scissors in her possession, Ma absorbed Rahab into her body first and continued searching for the other vessels of sin in order to absorb the others.

As time progressed, the Freezis Foundation, during their search to obtain Ma's immortality, became increasingly wicked and corrupt, with some members even becoming HERs. During this time, around the tenth century EC, Ma became acquainted with the young Bruno Zero, who was a slave of the Freezis Family. Fitting her original cover story of being a missionary, Ma was officially recognized as a member of the Levin Church. Later on, Ma met and entered a romance with Gandalf Marlon. During this time, Ma became acquainted with one of Gandalf's colleagues, Hanma Baldured, a judge in the USE Dark Star Bureau.

In April of EC 944, Ma broke into the home of Mata Corpa and stole the Marlon Spoon in his possession, killing Mata during the theft. Having obtained the vessel of Greed, she absorbed its demon sometime afterward, and became powerful enough to safely remove Levia and Irina from her soul. Due to his magic potential, Ma became interested in Hanma as she searched for potential vessels. As her receptacles needed to be the same gender as the souls she wished to swap out, Ma turned her attention towards Hanma's daughter, Lilith Baldured.

Performing magical procedures on her, Ma tried to turn the child into a receptacle for Levia. As a result of the procedure, Lilith became an ageless, voiceless, and emotionless shell of her former self. Hanma was struggling to take care of his daughter alone, while also fulfilling his ambitions in the Dark Star Bureau; soon, Ma accepted Hanma to be her apprentice, teaching him magic to aid his ambitions in exchange for him handing Lilith over to her. Finding that Levia refused to go into Lilith as a vessel, Ma instead made the girl into her subordinate under the name "Postman".

She also resolved to make her own magical receptacle by having a baby with her lover, Gandalf, only for the resultant child to be a boy, one that they named Gallerian. Later that month, Ma was captured by the World Police to be trialed as a witch, as well as Mata's murderer, in the Dark Star Bureau Courthouse. Knowing that the Freezis Foundation saw her as a threat and planned to do away with her, Ma had Hanma act as her judge to fake her execution for being a "witch", so that she couldn't be given the death sentence again later. When the plan was discovered by the Freezises, Hanma was forced instead to give Ma a new identity altogether.

After her trial, as Ma was being dragged away, Gandalf broke through the guards at attendance and Hanma allowed them a moment to say goodbye. Gallerian's wet nurse, Polina Marchef, also brought their infant son to the couple. Unable to tell Gandalf the truth, Ma was only able to sadly make her farewells to her lover. Holding her baby for the last time, Ma also expressed her hope that Gallerian would grow up to be a good and just member of the court system, like his father. After bantering with Gandalf further, Ma was taken away.

Recruiting Gallerian

With her death faked, Ma changed her public name to "Kayo Sudou" and eventually took up a career as a playwright with Ma as her pen name. Using the cover story that she was one of "Elluka Clockworker's" disciples, Ma made a variety of films glorifying Elluka's past exploits and telling of events in Evillious' history. Ten years since their last meeting, Ma appeared before Bruno Zero again and aided the organization that he had secretly established to overthrow the Freezis Foundation, PN.

Gallerian tries Ma innocent

Later on, Ma had an unlicensed screening with her fourteen staff members for several of her movies, including "Escape of Salmhofer the Witch", "The Great Wall and the Watchman", "Gift From the Princess Who Brought Sleep", and "The Tailor of Enbizaka". In EC 959, two members of an anti-witch extremist group raided the theater and Ma struck them with lightning, nearly killing them. She was soon arrested by the World Police for her illegal screenings, attempted murder, and witchcraft.

Ma was reunited with Gallerian when he presided over her trial, surprised by how young her judge was. Representing herself as the defense, Ma denied trying to kill people with witchcraft and remained composed throughout the trial, satisfied when Gallerian eventually declared her innocent. Lying to the authorities that she was going to live in Pixie, Ma took to living in the underground laboratory, Lunaca Labora, among other places. Knowing that Loki Freezis was going to have Gallerian killed, Ma arranged for Bruno to save him so he could be recruited as a "front man" for PN.

After Gallerian was shot and brought to Lunaca Labora to recover, Ma came in to greet him while he talked with the other members of PN. As she talked with Gallerian, Ma explained the history of the laboratory before driving the conversation to the matter of Loki, explaining how PN wished to stop the Freezis Conglomerate and how, maintaining her ruse as Elluka's disciple, they had betrayed her "master". Ma went on to tell Gallerian that Loki was a HER and that he and his entire family were wicked; having thus convinced Gallerian to join their organization, she asked that he call her "Ma" rather than "Kayo".

In the interests of bribing the judge to try Loki guilty for his crimes, Ma and Gallerian visited Gusuma Yarera of the Yarera-Zusco Conglomerate in private. After greeting Gusuma, the two explained their desires to use the Yarera's wealth and Gusuma explained he would need to get the head of the conglomerate's approval. Ma suggested currying favor by using a bribe to release the serial killer Jorm Zusco, whom the conglomerate head considered like a son to her. Receiving the bribe money from the approving Gusuma, Ma left with Gallerian and explained that she would have Hel Jaakko deliver it to Hanma Baldured, discussing the members of PN as they left.

Once Jorm was slated for release, Ma went with PN member Feng Li and Gusuma to assess his mental state in prison. While there, she chatted with Feng about what the members of PN would be doing after Loki was brought down. Knocking on Jorm's cell door, Ma watched him become erratic and overexcited, even more so to see a woman, and she was strangely wounded by Jorm even through the door. Although amazed at his abilities, Ma, determined he was too dangerous for release and could only be spared execution. Chatting with Feng about the oddness of him having become an HER after birth, Ma left with the others and the Yarera's gave PN the money needed to convict Loki.

Removing Levia

After Loki's execution, Ma began serving as Gallerian's magical adviser over the next two years, helping to determine guilt of suspected witches and aiding in all other magic-related cases. Later, on the night of Gallerian's birthday, Ma and Gallerian met at a bar and inn to discuss an upcoming trial; after their dinner, the two started chatting about how much Gallerian had learned about magic thanks to her, before Ma ordered a bottle of Blood Grave to celebrate Gallerian's twentieth birthday.

As she ordered the bottle, Gallerian opened up to Ma about how terribly his relationship with his wife Mira was going, unable to even divorce her so as to protect his young daughter Michelle. When the Blood Grave arrived, Gallerian got drunk on it and Ma helped him up to the room of the inn she was staying in. As she tended to him, the drunk Gallerian began trying to seduce her; although initially resisting, Ma, realizing she could use Gallerian to conceive another magical receptacle, decided to sleep with him.

For the next half-year Ma carried on an affair with Gallerian, becoming pregnant with his child. One night, Bruno met with Ma and argued with her to leave Gallerian alone, knowing due to their past meeting that she was in reality the "Elluka Clockworker" that had been executed. As they began to discuss what she was doing, Ma cryptically explained to him how she was having her affair to remove her "impurities". Bruno, nonetheless, told her to leave the country and Ma agreed, noting how much he cared about Gallerian. Ma then bid Bruno farewell.

The next day, Ma went to bid Hanma goodbye and visited him in his office at the courthouse. After telling Hanma she would be leaving the country, the two reminisced about how he had saved her from execution twenty years ago. Hanma ended up explaining that the World Police, having discovered his true identity, would be coming to the courthouse soon and that Ma should flee. Discussing their respective plans, the two promised to keep in touch and Ma left out the back. After traveling to the Millennium Tree Forest, Ma gave birth to her child, a little girl she named Nemesis Sudou, in an abandoned house in EC 964.

Ma successfully transferred Levia's soul to Nemesis. With the baby having served its purpose, Ma left it for dead and instructed Hanma, who had by this time fled the World Police and taken up the name "Nikolay Tolle", to kill her. After leaving the forest, Ma spent the next fourteen years traveling the world, collecting rare books and writing screenplays about them. One day in EC 978, Ma sent a letter to Gallerian asking him to meet her in the Misty Mountains of Asmodean.

Ma waited at an altar in the Misty Mountains with all of the rare books she'd collected; after Postman brought Gallerian and his group to the altar, Ma brushed it off when he accosted her over her sudden absence. When Bruno asked her why she'd sent her later, Ma cited she wanted to meet Michelle as one of her reasons, and later requested that they help her move her books with their car. When Gallerian offered to drive her, her books, and Postman, Ma explained that Postman had communicated walking back alone.

Not long after, Ma became reacquainted with Tony Ausdin since his days as a security guard. Soon, Gallerian, Tony, and Shiro Netsuma departed and Bruno went to help carry Ma's books to the car. She assured him she wouldn't resume her affair with Gallerian, among other things, and then they headed to the car. After returning to Levianta, Ma began living in army quarters while assisting Tony Ausdin with fighting a mysterious slew of undead forces, instructed to ask officers Nyoze or Gammon Octo for anything she needed.

Later, Ma visited Gallerian in his mansion and introduced herself to his daughter, Michelle, lying that she had her face changed to resemble the girl's grandmother when Michelle pointed out the resemblance. She also claimed, as Gallerian noted how youthful she looked, that her not aging was due to Lunaca Labora. As Michelle expressed interest in Lunaca Labora for making Ma look so beautiful, Ma cryptically remarked on Michelle's own beautiful appearance as being how she expected. She claimed to want to chat with her later; as Michelle explained that she and Mira were going on a trip for the next two weeks, she promised they'd talk when she returned.

Ma then spoke with Gallerian, requesting that he sponsor a film adaptation of the "special edition" of Yukina Freezis' book "The Daughter of Evil". After persuading him to read the book, she also had him promise to hand it off to Tony, as the special edition discussed undead soldiers. After promising Michelle she could have a part in the film, Ma left. On the day before Michelle and Mira would return from their trip, Ma visited Gallerian's mansion and, once she was able, greeted him in his study. After talking to him about the book and insisting that its account of events was the truth, she was disappointed when Gallerian declined being a sponsor for her film.

After she mused over the return of Gallerian's wife tomorrow, denying intending to reveal their affair to her, Ma eventually heard Gallerian ask about the other characters in the story. The two got into a conversation about the names of Elluka Clockworker and Gumillia mentioned in the book, which had come up later in history, and about Germaine Avadonia, who had been sighted as Julia Abelard. The conversation ended with Ma claiming to Gallerian that Abyss I.R. had collected the vessels of sin to have a wish of hers granted.

Although trying to convince Gallerian that they look for the vessels of sin together, he declined on the grounds of not wanting to spend the money, stating he had no need for the vessels. Seeming to accept his answer, Ma soon after departed, although not before asking him to let her know if he ever changed his mind. After Gallerian's wife and daughter were killed, PN ended up recovering the Clockworker's Doll from Nemesis' house and Postman brought it to Ma. Stealing the Marlon Spoon, which now contained Adam Moonlit's soul, from where it still lay in evidence lockup, Ma concocted a plan to use Gallerian's grief to make him help her find the vessels of sin.

Dark Star Scandal

To make him cooperate with her plan, Ma lied to Adam that the mysterious soul which she had put in the Clockworker's Doll was his beloved, Eve Moonlit. Ma then took the spoon and the Clockworker's Doll to Gallerian's mansion, meeting him in Michelle's room. After Gallerian confronted her there and she managed to calm him down, Ma reminded him of their conversation on the vessels of sin and what he had learned about them from "The Daughter of Evil". She then revealed she had one, showing him the Marlon Spoon and explaining that she had stolen it from the lockup.

After she and Gallerian argued over her theft of evidence, Ma handed the spoon off to him and explained how it was inhabited now by Adam Moonlit, not the Demon of Greed. She declared that Adam could possibly help Gallerian if he made a contract with him. Once Gallerian was convinced to contract with Adam, Ma gave him the Clockworker's Doll and claimed that Michelle's soul was inside it, and that he would only be able to speak with her as long as he kept the Marlon Spoon on hand. She then had him agree to collect the other vessels of deadly sin for her, so that he could make a wish to restore his daughter.

When Gusuma Yarera refused to fund Gallerian's search for the vessels, Gallerian began using his position as judge to take bribes to decide his rulings, beginning by pardoning Bindi Freezis, the man behind the deaths of Michelle and Mira. Shortly after Bindi was pardoned, Jorm Zusco was arranged to escape from prison and Ma had him contained in Lunaca Labora under medication. She later met with Gallerian in his study and noted that it was unwise to make an enemy of Gusuma by pardoning Bindi.

The two discussed his future plans for gathering the vessels and Ma brought up Nyoze Octo, who had one of them himself; she also cautioned Gallerian to be careful collecting all the vessels, claiming that they hated to be assembled together. Later on, she accompanied Gallerian on his visit to the Octo brothers' home in Samadin. They soon spotted the Venom Sword, although Nyoze prevented them from taking it, citing it was a family heirloom and that anyone who wasn't an Octo risked being enchanted by it. During this argument, Ma suggested that it was not the real Octo family heirloom but rather Anan Octo's replacement for it.

Unable to persuade Nyoze, Gallerian and Ma left; during the return back, Ma posited to Gallerian that the Demon of Lust inside the sword had already taken in Nyoze and probably had also taken in Gallerian, himself, having the ability to charm people. Later, Gallerian framed Nyoze for the murder of Medea Col and had the Venom Sword confiscated as evidence. A few days later, Ma visited him at home and again waited in Michelle's room with the Clockworker's Doll. When Gallerian entered Michelle's room that night, she welcomed him and brushed off his subsequent irritation with her. She finally agreed to leave, and had Gallerian fetch the Venom Sword.

After she'd determined the Venom Sword was authentic, she encouraged Gallerian to continue collecting the vessels of sin and, in response to Gallerian's concerns about being discovered, suggested storing them far from the public eye. Also reminding Gallerian to continue to hold on to the Marlon Spoon, Ma left the room and then, as Gallerian began to converse with Michelle, she departed from the mansion completely. Sometime later, she absorbed the Demon of Lust like the others.

A Fate of Corruption

Gallerian soon obtained the Glass of Conchita after shutting down the Graveyard restaurant. Delayed by a snowstorm, Ma called him to say she would pick it up tomorrow rather than that day. After she arrived however, she was displeased to find that Lich and Eater were now in Gallerian's employ, remembering them from the days when they were forest spirits. Gallerian also explained that she had been banned from getting near the glass. Nonplussed, Ma noted it was likely to keep her from taking the demon's power before their discussion went back to Lich and Eater.

After Gallerian had acquitted the celebrity Scherzer of assaulting a woman, Ma heard rumors of the celebrity being involved in a recent string of women disappearances in the area and learned the media coverage of the whistleblower was being suppressed. She later visited Gallerian's mansion and joined him in his study as he worked; while she did, she talked to him about the rumors she'd heard and watched Gallerian bitterly depart to investigate the matter.

Later on, as Gallerian began collecting more vessels of sin, Ma accompanied him to an auction in in Maistia to acquire two more of the Four Mirrors of Lucifenia. By EC 982, as war broke out in Evillious, Ma oversaw Gallerian's construction of a theater in the Millennium Tree Forest, drawing up the plans for it herself using technology from the Magic Kingdom Levianta. She watched alongside Gallerian as the building was completed, giving it the name Evil's Theater, and the two discussed how they would be moving all the vessels into it to keep them safe.

A month later the theater was completed and all of the vessels, excluding the Marlon Spoon, were moved inside. Inside, Ma watched a screening alone for her film "The Tailor of Enbizaka"; when it was over, she moved to the director's office where the vessels were placed and greeted Lich, promising she wouldn't touch the glass. After the two bantered for a time, with Ma suggesting Lich go out and visit his old acquaintances in the forest, she put Kayo's scissors down with the rest of the vessels.

Evil's Theater

After Gallerian's death during the Leviantan Civil War in EC 983, Ma inherited the judge's collection, retrieving the burned Clockworker's Doll from his mansion. A few days later, she disappeared into the Millennium Tree Forest and stored the remaining vessels in Evil's Theater, taking up residence there as the Gardener, as well as angrily driving Hanma out of the forest. The burned Clockworker's Doll was attached to the inner workings of Heartbeat Clocktower to sustain her life, and the awakened vessel of Greed, Gear, began to maintain the tower. As more of the vessels began to awaken, Ma began writing about their actions; around this time, she obtained the allegiance of the Master of the Graveyard, tasking her with guarding the theater from intruders.

With rumors of Gallerian's fortune being hidden in the theater, Ma witnessed visitors to the forest being captured and eaten by the Master of the Graveyard for their intrusion. Sometime after the forest earned the name "Evil's Forest", Ma happened upon a greedy intruder while wandering the forest and she chatted with them for a while about the forest. After the Clockworker's Doll was revitalized and took on the name "Master of the Court", Ma promised that Gallerian's vision of Utopia would come true if all the vessels of sin were collected, pushing the doll to continue her "father's" quest and grant his wish.

Afterwards, Ma penned several screenplays regarding Evillious and the Seven Deadly Sins and had them adapted as films for the theater. After an intruder had entered the theater, the playwright had the visitor watch some films with her and explained the story behind each of them. After the fifteen films were finished, Ma offered to play a word game with the visitor before they were put on trial and sentenced to death by the Master of the Court.

Later, one of the intruders, Gammon Octo, was made into the choreman and new gardener for the theater. Becoming acquainted with Gammon, Ma used his Purple Dream ability to assist her in writing her screenplays; she also saw when Gammon submitted a "motion" to review the script regarding his vision for the Director Doll's utopia. In EC 998, she along with the other awakened vessels of sin attended the "trial" meeting called by the Master of the Court. While there, she told her of what she knew about the vessel of Wrath, determining that it was probably in "her" hands.

Almost Pure

Over time, Ma absorbed the demons of Pride and Gluttony from their vessels, while also retaining the soul of Eve Moonlit, the "Demon of Sloth". When Nemesis Sudou, having become the dictator of Elphegort, used Punishment to destroy the Millennium Tree Forest, Ma protected Evil's Theater from the blast using her magic. The following year, Nemesis came to the theater to confront Ma directly, with Ma having understood that Nemesis was contracted to the Demon of Wrath. Once Nemesis made it inside, Ma greeted her in the great hall of the theater, becoming angry with her over her destruction of the forest and the revival of the "boy" of destruction to create Punishment.

Nemesis explained everything about the creation of Punishment, and then noted how she killed Bruno after he and his group came to stop her from using it. Ma pointed out that Bruno had originally saved her, only for Nemesis to rebuke the notion. Ma later brought up Nemesis' murder of Nikolay. When Nemesis brought up Nikolay's supposed orders to take care of her, as she had believed, Ma revealed to her that she had instructed Nikolay to kill her, although he had grown to care for her. Speculating it was out of projecting because of his own daughter, Ma had Postman come into the room and related her subordinate's past as Lilith Baldured.

Ma explained that she had ordered to have Nemesis killed because she had fulfilled her purpose in being born, and simply wanted to get rid of her, while not caring to kill her herself. She dismissed Nemesis' memories of her being a kind mother as a delusion to cope with being abandoned, and asserted that subconsciously Nemesis had tried to kill her by destroying the forest because of this. Afterwards, Ma began strangling Nemesis, explaining that she could kill her using the power of the six demons inside her, and desiring to take the final demon within Nemesis.

As she attacked Nemesis, Postman stabbed Ma in the back with the Venom Sword, forcing her to collapse. As Nemesis prepared to shoot her with a bullet from Grim the End, Ma bitterly lamented not killing her when she was born, bemoaning how she had almost become pure after removing Levia and Irina and absorbing six of the demons. As Nemesis resolved to destroy the whole world, Ma began to note that this was in keeping as her true nature as Levia, only for Nemesis to shoot her and cut her off. After Ma died, all of the demons she had absorbed separated; however, thanks to the Master of the Court's Black Box, Ma was able to harbor her will within Lilith, the closest living thing.

A Desperate Existence

Ma continued to stay dormant with Riliane's body as she journeyed around the Third Period. When Riliane, Sateriasis, and Kayo came to Evil's Theater to confront the "Sleep Princess" Michelle Marlon, they met with Gallerian and Gammon while Michelle played with the irregular twins Adam and Eve. When Banica Conchita also arrived, Ma found herself in the company of six of the seven sin contractors and she seized the opportunity to absorb them all, hoping to again become a pure being. As she did so, she also took over Riliane's body.

She then exited the theater's director's office where Gammon was dueling with Allen Avadonia and Nemesis. Although she was attacked by Gammon Octo, Ma quickly deflected his attacks using her demonic powers. She then tried to attack the others, only for Eve to block her attack. As she bantered with Eve, Adam suddenly began a Re_birthday sequence inside the theater.

Sprouting wings, Ma managed to escape the building in Riliane's body and took off, as a vortex began forming from her that threatened to take in all of Evillious. Flying back to the ground Ma was confronted by Allen, who refused to give her Nemesis' location. The two then talked, discussing among other things the nature of "irregulars" and how she had gained knowledge by discovering Black Box Type B in the Grave Yard. As they fought, Ma also explained to Allen her motive of confirming her own existence, even if it led to the end of the world.

While the two of them faced off, Nemesis summoned a tornado and trapped Ma and Allen inside; Ma soon countered it with a spell of her own. She then began flying towards Nemesis and Allen, only to be stopped by Michaela, and soon nearly every soul, singing the Clockwork Lullaby. Soon after, Nemesis attempted to pull a body swap on Ma; as Ma resisted the spell and used one on Nemesis in turn, the two struggled until Allen attacked Ma with Grim the End, breaking her control on the contractors inside her.

As Ma's consciousness dispersed, she desperately attacked Nemesis, who swapped her soul into the Clockworker's Doll being held by Riliane. Nemesis then allowed Ma to take over her own living body and therefore relinquish her control on Riliane. As Ma fell to the ground, Seth broke his contract with Nemesis' body and Ma was killed on impact, ceasing to exist entirely.

Personality and Traits

Being born of an amalgamation of souls, Ma's personality was a combination of her constituent selves' personalities. Her outward behavior, in particular, was like that of Levia Barisol in her Elluka Clockworker identity. She therefore maintained an amiable and lackadaisical attitude with a tendency to tease; similarly, she was careless about others' social conventions, although she got along well enough when necessary. As time went on, Ma's behavior also involved directly manipulating people with cryptic comments, half-truths, and occasionally outright lies. She also became fond of smoking from a long pipe.

Ma was also selfish to the point of doing evil, as reflective of the other souls inside her. Although initially known for helping people, occasionally displaying a conscience or even being capable of falling in love, Ma became unscrupulous in her quest to confirm her own existence. Additionally, even her seemingly altruistic actions often had an underlying selfish motive to them. This became particularly pronounced after removing Levia, with Ma thinking nothing of instigating theft, corruption, and murder, even manipulating those she considered genuine friends. As Ma became more desperate her actions accordingly became more malicious and selfish, until she became willing to let the entire world be destroyed for the sake of saving herself.

However, Ma's wickedness was directly motivated by a wish to exist as her own being. Understanding she had neither a soul, a past, or even her own personality, Ma became obsessed with trying to find a way to confirm her existence, and as well a way to survive the world's end. This led to Ma wishing to become a "pure" being, one that was just herself without her constituent souls, even if such a being was evil by necessity. Ma only became more frantic after removing Levia, with her consciousness beginning to degrade, and by the time of her death she had become wholly absorbed in achieving this goal.

Ma's wish to be her own being also manifested in a fixation on stories. As part of her quest, Ma wished to find her own "story", a past and history such as everyone else in the Third Period had. Due to this, she continually sought out and recorded the adventures of other people in hopes it would help her find her story, becoming a playwright and screenwriter. Despite this, Ma only became frustrated as she began to believe she was just inserting herself into others' stories, not realizing that her own struggles constituted a story in and of itself.

Skills and Abilities

Known as the "Sorceress of Time", Ma was a powerful mage with strong magic, possessing the magical power of two powerful mages and a god. Despite this, she was for a time unable to use much of her overwhelming power and couldn't even conjure fire or lightning as she remembered. However, the mage still possessed the Swap Technique, allowing her to utilize the spell to move souls between bodies. Centuries after her creation, however, Ma was able to perform hypnosis as well as wind magic. After taking on Kayo Sudou's body, she was similarly able to regain most of her abilities. After absorbing the contractors, Ma obtained their powers as well.

In a similar vein, Ma maintained all the knowledge and experience of the souls comprising her will, including their immense knowledge about magic, Hereditary Evil Raiser Syndrome, the gods, the vessels of sin, and all the events surrounding them. She was also an experienced penman, adapting many historical events from the Evillious' history into features reenacted at Evil's Theater. Due to containing the soul of a god, Ma was also an ageless immortal. Because of the immensity of her magic, the mage required an especially suitable human body to act as her vessel.

Character Connections

Gallerian Marlon: Ma's partner and son. Originally regretful for abandoning him as a baby, Ma came to feel no maternal feelings for him whatsoever. As such, she instead became a close friend to him, while also manipulating him not only with their affair but in gathering together the vessels of sin. Despite this, she was frustrated with his stingy nature and found his corrupt court tactics distasteful. Ma often enjoyed teasing Gallerian and later became amused with his obsessive love for the Clockworker's Doll.

Gammon Octo: A fellow member of Evil's Theater and the Gardener after her. Knowing him from his days in the military, Ma got along with Gammon well enough to let him tend to her garden and let him help her write screenplays for the cinema, seeing his clairvoyant "Purple Dream" ability as useful. Despite this, she was disturbed by his visions predicting the world as ending when the sins are gathered.

Master of the Graveyard: A fellow member of Evil's Theater. Ma viewed the Master of the Graveyard as a useful ally when gathering the other vessels of sin, relying on her insatiable hunger to keep away potential thieves away from the theater.

Master of the Court: A fellow member of Evil's Theater. Ma saw the Master of the Court, as director of Evil's Theater, useful for fulfilling her goals, and previously had used her to manipulate both Adam and Gallerian. She became a primary influence on her actions as a means to control the whole theater.

Kayo Sudou: The physical body of Ma. Ma pitied Kayo for her loss and inability to recover from it, urging her to move on from her family's deaths and use her new body as a fresh start. Despite this, she ultimately swapped bodies with Kayo for her own benefit, and she saw fit to use Kayo's name centuries after the tailor's death.

Nemesis Sudou: Ma's daughter and granddaughter. After using Nemesis as a receptacle for Levia's soul, Ma saw no more use for her and compared the baby to rubbish, although not caring to kill her herself. She furthermore took no interest in Nemesis' life afterwards; when finding herself at Nemesis' mercy near the end, Ma bitterly regretted not killing the child when she had the chance.

Postman: Ma's subordinate. Thinking nothing of how she had reduced Lilith to the doll-like Postman, Ma trusted her explicitly as her lackey and had her cover a large series of tasks. This trust left her vulnerable when Postman ultimately betrayed her.

Hanma Baldured: Ma's apprentice. Ma had no remorse for what she had done to Hanma's daughter, and continually manipulated and used Hanma for her own ends, and ultimately the two parted on poor terms as a result of him disobeying her with Nemesis. Despite this, the two got on with each other amiably for most of their partnership.

Conceptualization and Origin

• Ma's name is derived from the title of Ma and also stands for "Mem Aleph", having similar origins as the title.
• In-universe, Ma's name also means "madoushi" and "mother"; the former is derived from 魔道師 (madoushi), the Japanese word for mage.
• Interestingly, the syllable for "Ma" is the root sound for "mother" in many romance languages.

Curiosities

• When offering to reveal her identity in the Evils Kingdom booklet, Ma has the reader solve a puzzle to reveal the remaining letters following the "Ma" in her name; after completing the puzzle, her identity is spelled out as being a "Magician".
• In The Muzzle of Nemesis, Ma's appearance in the PV is complemented by the text for "Mother" in the background with the "her" portion colored red instead of black like the rest of the word.
• She shares the same birthday (January 30) with her Vocaloid.
