This is a list of characters that have appeared or are mentioned in passing in the novel Unlock City.

AllenEdit

Allen[note 1] was the head of Evillious.net. At some point, he set up a "game" for Tsuruki City in which an invisible wall would surround the city and all locks would stop working, hoping to learn more about the nature of fear. He then observed as the events in Tsuruki played out, and once everything was over, sent an announcement to the other members of Evillious.net detailing the results of the game and the participants' roles. He then explained that, once a new "game" began, the participants would have new names and addresses.[1] He also, around this time, fought several individuals, among them being Tokitou Masaki and Sudou Kayoko.[2]

KamekoEdit

Kameko was a young noblewoman who lived during the Meiji Period. According to the myth about her, she fell in love with a man of a lower social standing, and was separated from him by her father, imprisoned in Mekage Shrine. On Tanabata, all locks stopped working and she escaped from the shrine. It was theorized that she made a deal with the god living inside the shrine's black box by putting her hairpin inside.[3]

Kayama AtsukiEdit

AviAtsuki
Kayama Atsuki[note 2] was Takahagi Koudai's coworker and a member of Evillious.net, an avid computer geek and shut-in. Earlier in life Atsuki was brought up on criminal charges for hacking, allegedly falsely, but was able to avoid getting his name in the papers. He furthermore used his connections in Evillious.net to land a job in a security company in Tsuruki City despite his criminal record.

Later on, Atsuki, along with the other members of Evillious.net, was informed that something would happen on Tanabata and that to stop it the "Master" needed to be killed within the week.[1] When all locks in the city stopped working a week later on Tanabata, Atsuki began helping Koudai in tracking down the culprit, using his computer skills to hack into the security company's database. He then traced the mysterious e-mails Koudai received to an internet cafe.[4]

Checking the cafe's security camera footage, Atsuki and Koudai discovered that it was Koudai's friend Mika who sent the e-mails, Atsuki going through Mika's browser history and confirming the fact. Later on, Atsuki visited the city library and learned about a similar happening during the Meiji period, concerning the noblewoman Kameko and the Mekage Shrine. Sharing the information with Koudai, Atsuki went with him to the Mekage Shrine in search of Mika, whom they then found with the missing Director Shinichi.

After the two witnessed Shinichi interrogate Mika over the e-mails and then kill her, Koudai disarmed him; he and Atsuki then called for the authorities.[3] Following the end of the unlocking incident, Atsuki was declared by Allen as one of the "winners" of the "game" for discovering the connection to Kameko.[1]

KuboEdit

Kubo[note 3] was a student at Tsuruki High School. At some point, rumors spread that she had a crush on one of the teachers, Nonomiya. Trapped inside the school, Kubo barricaded herself with the other students inside the music room to avoid the bear. After Seiryuu returned and announced that Nonomiya had been killed, Kubo ran off to find him and didn't return.[3]

The day before and during the week of Tanabata, Mika also sent several e-mails to Koudai, warning him of the things that would happen. As the unlocking incident went on, Mika and her partner Takatomi dealt with a traffic accident at the city's border,[6] before being called to the Tsuruki High School after the serial killer Saruta was spotted there.[4] Mika then went home and was visited by Shinichi, questioned about the e-mails she sent. Claiming she didn't know who instructed her or what would happen, Mika was then fatally stabbed by Shinichi.[3]

MetaEdit

AviBear
Meta[note 5] was an Asian black bear living inside the Tsuruki City zoo.[2] After Mika put her black bear charm inside the Mekage Shrine's shintai, Meta gained the ability to unlock any lock and put up invisible walls.[1] Escaping from his enclosure from the zoo, the bear caused all locks in the city to stop working and put up a barrier on the city's borders.[6] Meta then went into the city's high school, eating and attacking the people inside and putting up a barrier around the school.[4] After it attacked Otoha and Seiryuu, Otoha used the powers of the Mekage Shrine to defeat the bear and Meta was captured and sedated. It was later put down by the police, causing things to start going back to normal.[5]

Later, he left the music room to look for the other staff and was killed by the bear in the library.[3] Mr. Nonomiya was noted as wearing a slovenly blue tie,[6] as well as being tall and sturdy-looking. He was also believed to have some knowledge of the occult.[3]

At some point, Shinichi entered a close relationship with Mika.[3] Later on, Shinichi, along with the other members of Evillious.net, was informed that something would happen on Tanabata and that to stop it the "Master" needed to be killed within the week.[1]

When all locks in the city stopped working a week later on Tanabata, Shinichi sent Koudai to company headquarters as no calls or e-mails were getting through to them.[7] He was later told by Koudai about a mysterious e-mail he received.[6] Four days since Tanabata, Shinichi went missing,[4] visiting Mika at Mekage Shrine. After interrogating her about the e-mails, Shinichi stabbed Mika under the impression that she was the "Master", before being disarmed by Koudai soon after and being arrested.[3]

Due to his actions, Shinichi was disqualified from the "game" and was not saved by Evillious.net from his criminal charges.[1]
