This is a list of characters that have appeared or are mentioned in passing in the Story of Evil junior novel series.

Deus

AviDeus

Deus[note 1] was a wraith and the clockwork demon of Lust. Taking on the form of a clockwork toy ram, he was purchased by the student Mana from a toy shop. After Deus revealed his true nature to her two nights later, Mana eagerly forged a demon contract with him. Later on, Deus used his Lust powers to get the boys at Mana's school pay attention to her, with increasing intensity until they started treating her like a queen.

Itsuki and his friends then confronted Mana, having her read a story; this caused her contract with Deus to be broken. As Deus, enraged, prepared to attack them, he was quickly taken back by the toy shop owner Tarou, who claimed that he was entitled to Deus since he was bought on false pretenses. Deus was then presumably returned to the toy shop, with the boys affected by his powers losing their memories.[1]

Endou Itsuki

AviItsuki

Endou Itsuki[note 2] is Masaki's nephew and Haruto's cousin, a young boy that contracted with Marie. Getting caught up in a bullying incident at school, Itsuki's family decided to move.[1] After they temporarily moved into his uncle Masaki's apartment complex, Masaki entrusted the boy with the keys to his library and the "secret archive" inside. Exploring the archive one day, Itsuki accidentally unleashed and contracted with a paper demon, the Demon of Pride, Marie. Later he took Marie out to see the outside. In the process, he met and befriended a girl named Tsugumi and her Shikigami named Tomozou, telling the girl about his contract.

Masaki later confronted Itsuki about entering the archive and explained the nature of the demons to him, introducing him to Rahab and Gilles. Itsuki learned, among other things, that to break his contract with Marie he needed to write a story that would be accepted by the demons. When one of the demons, Salem, was discovered missing, Itsuki enlisted Tsugumi and his cousin Haruto to go find him, without telling Haruto the truth of the demons. They eventually discover the demon was stolen by the broke lawyer Maguchi.

After Salem was stolen from Maguchi in turn by a college student on a bike, Itsuki and his friends pursued him until Itsuki eventually confronted the student on the roof of a building. Just as Itsuki had recovered Salem, a gust of wind blew the demon out of his grasp and he fell over the side of the roof to catch it, soon after he was rescued by Marie. Afterwards he wrote a ten page story about his adventures while talking things over with Haruto and Tsugumi.

A week after the adventure, he presented his story to all the demons of the archive, with his uncle, Maguchi, and his friends in attendance. After his story was accepted by most of the demons and Tomozou, Itsuki's contract was broken and he encouraged Maguchi to write a story next.[2]

Itsuki then began school, and, two months since his forging a contract with Marie, noticed a socially-isolated girl in his class, Hadzuki Mana. When Mana, due to her contract with the Lust clockwork demon Deus, started getting increasing attention from the boys to the point of sowing chaos among his classmates, Itsuki visited the secret archive with his mother and Tsugumi, seeking the paper demons' help.

After discussing matters with the paper demons, Itsuki, along with Tsugumi, Marie and Kyouko contacted Masaki's ex-wife Kayoko, visiting her in Maruo City. There, she explained the history of the witching hour during the Meta Escape Incident of twenty years ago, as well as that scribes from the Tokitou clan could fight wraiths and their contractors by writing stories.

Given special paper by Kayoko to boost his power, Itsuki then began writing a story about Mana. Confronting her with it, Itsuki tried getting her to read it, only for her to reject it. Itsuki then wrote Mana a story about someone who was socially isolated like her, having her read it and successfully breaking her contract with Deus. Following the end of the incident, with everything having calmed down and the affected boys losing their memories, Itsuki along with Haruto and Tsugumi was taken by Mana to the toy shop where she bought Deus. Once there, they discovered that it had mysteriously vanished.[1]

Endou Kyouko

Endou Kyouko[note 3] was the mother of Itsuki and the younger sister of Masaki. In her youth, she, Masaki and their friend Kayoko fought wraiths during the Meta Escape Incident, with Kyouko using her powers as a scribe part of the Tokitou clan. She later married and had a son, Itsuki; when Itsuki became involved in a bullying incident at his school, she took him out of said school,[1] and the family bought a new home, temporarily moving into Masaki's apartment complex while it was being renovated.[2]

Later on, Masaki planned to leave for two weeks and hired Kyouko to manage the apartments in his absence. When an incident broke out at Itsuki's school due to one of the students, Hadzuki Mana, having contracted with the Lust clockwork demon Deus, Kayoko accompanied her son and his friend Tsugumi to Masaki's secret archive, seeking help from the paper demons. Upon their advice, they contacted Masaki's ex-wife Kayoko, traveling to Maruo City to meet with her.

While there, Kayoko explained how she, Kyouko and Masaki had fought wraiths during the Meta Escape Incident years before, as well as the powers of scribes in the Tokitou clan to break contracts forged between people and wraiths. Following the conclusion of the incident, Kayoko spoke with Mana over the matter, having been classmates with her mother; she assured Mana that Itsuki would forgive her, revealing Itsuki's own past struggles with bullying.[1]

Gilles

AviGilles

Gilles[note 4] was one of the paper demons living in Masaki's archive, the Demon of Lust and a copy of Gilles Derais. After Itsuki unwittingly contracted with Marie, Masaki introduced Gilles and Rahab to Itsuki while explaining the nature of the paper demons. He was later one of the demons who accepted the story Itsuki wrote to break his contract.[2] When Itsuki, his mother Kyouko and Tsugumi visited the demons once again to seek help in dealing with Mana, the girl having contracted to the clockwork demon of Lust Deus, Gilles commented on how Deus wielded similar powers he once did, having lost them upon becoming a paper demon.[1]

Hadzuki Mana

AviMana

Hadzuki Mana[note 5] was Itsuki's classmate at school and a contractor of Deus, the clockwork demon of Lust. At some point, she became interested in both demons and the Meta Escape Incident. One day after school started, Mana came upon a mysterious toy shop and was taken with a clockwork ram on display. Despite not being able to afford it, Mana was able to purchase it with the help of the lawyer Maguchi.

Two nights later, the ram revealed itself to be a wraith; Mana then eagerly contracted with it and named it Deus. Wanting boys to notice her, Mana used Deus' powers to make her male classmates talk to her; they continued giving her more and more attention over the following days, to the point of treating her like a queen. With the entire school under her control, Mana was confronted by her classmates Itsuki and Tsugumi. Refusing to read the story Itsuki wrote, Mana drove them off.

Seeing one of the boys, Haruto, look at Itsuki with concern as he left, Mana prompted him to tell her more about Itsuki. Haruto then explained that Itsuki had been involved in a bullying incident before, causing him to switch schools. The next day, when Itsuki confronted Mana again with a story, Mana accosted him about being bullied. As Itsuki turned the tables around and confronted her about being socially isolated herself, Mana had the boys throw Itsuki out, almost succeeding. Upon Haruto's intervention, Mana was made to read the story, her contract with Deus broken as a result.[1]

Deus then attempted to attack the group before being quickly taken back by the shopkeeper Tarou. Following the end of the incident, Mana took Haruto, Itsuki and Tsugumi to the toy shop she bought Deus from, only to find that it had vanished. She then spoke to Itsuki's mother Kyouko about the matter, reassured that Itsuki forgave her and still wanted to be her friend.

Hibino (father)

The president of a company and the father of Tsugumi. Descended from a line of mediums, the man had the ability to summon shikigami. During the Meta Escape Incident in his youth, he and several others, including Masaki, Kyouko and Kayoko, fought wraiths, the man using his shikigami to do so. He later had a daughter, Tsugumi, who became popular at her school due to his position as president of a company.[1]

Hibino Tsugumi

AviShigumi

Hibino Tsugumi[note 6] was a student befriended by Itsuki. Descended from a line of mediums, Tsugumi had the ability to summon a wolf spirit shikigami named Tomozou. She also, due to her father being the president of a company, enjoyed popularity and high status among the students at her school.[1]

Tsugumi encountered Itsuki shortly after he contracted with Marie; after warding off a potential kidnapper with Tomozou and revealing him in the process, she learned about Itsuki's contract in turn and she promised to visit the boy later.

When the Demon of Greed, Salem, was discovered stolen, Tsugumi was one of the friends Itsuki enlisted to go look for the thief. They eventually found that it was the lawyer Maguchi; when Maguchi was accosted by a biker and Salem was stolen again, Tsugumi stopped the biker before they could escape from Itsuki. She later called the police after Itsuki recovered Salem from the biker.

Tsugumi dropped by to see Itsuki later and they discussed the story he was writing to break his contract; although she attended a different school, she promised to stay in touch with her new friend. Tsugumi was later present when Itsuki broke his contract by presenting his story to the demons of the archive, having Tomozou accept the story when Rahab refused to.[2]

Two months after, when a student in Itsuki's class, Hadzuki Mana, put all the boys under her Lust spell using her demon contract with the wraith Deus, Tsugumi accompanied Itsuki and his mother Kyouko to Masaki's secret archive, seeking help from the paper demons. She was later present when Itsuki and Kyouko visited Haruto's mother Kayoko in Maruo City, as well as when Itsuki confronted Mana at the school. Later on, Tsugumi accompanied Haruto and Itsuki as Mana took them to the toy shop where she bought Deus, only to discover that it had vanished.[1]

Hosoyama

Hosoyoma[note 7] was an old fortune teller living in Masaki's apartment complex. When the demon Salem was discovered stolen, Itsuki and his friends investigated the other tenants, including Hosoyama, but she ultimately wasn't behind the theft.[2] Later on, the lawyer Maguchi approached her and she read his fortune, advising him to do good deeds to balance out his demon contract.[1]

Koumori Tarou

AviTarou

Koumori Tarou[note 8] was the owner of the of the toy shop Toy Land Père Noël. When a student, Hadzuki Mana, came by the toy shop and attempted to buy the clockwork ram on display, Tarou told her she couldn't afford it; the lawyer Maguchi then bought it for her. Soon after, Tarou discovered that the money Maguchi had paid with had returned to him, deciding to take the ram back.

Later on, Tarou secretly followed Mana's classmate Itsuki to his school, accompanied by a talking crow. When the clockwork ram, really a wraith named Deus, attempted to attack Mana and her classmates despite her contract with him being broken, Tarou quickly intervened and took back Deus, citing his reasons for doing so. Later on, when Mana took her classmates to Tarou's shop, they discovered that it had disappeared.[1]

Marie

AviMarie

Marie[note 9] was one of the paper demons living in Masaki's archive, the Demon of Pride and a copy of Marie Annette. When Masaki entrusted his nephew Itsuki with the key to his archive, the boy accidentally released Marie and unwittingly contracted with her after asking her to be quiet. Itsuki then took her outside the archive, where they met Tsugumi and Tomozou together.

Afterwards Marie accompanied Itsuki on the search to find the stolen demon Salem; when a college student made off with Salem on a bike, Marie gave Itsuki wings to fly after him before reaching her limit in flight. When Itsuki later confronted the thief on a roof, he recovered Salem but fell over the edge by accident; using her powers, Marie assured he survived the fall without a scratch. When Itsuki wrote up his story to break his contract with Marie, Marie reluctantly accepted the story along with most of the other demons.[2]

Two months after, Marie and the other paper demons were visited by Itsuki, Kyouko and Tsugumi at the secret archive, asked for help in dealing with a classmate who had forged a demon contract with a clockwork demon. She later accompanied them in visiting Kayoko at Maruo City.[1]

Maguchi

Maguchi[note 10] was a young lawyer living on the fourth floor of Masaki's apartment complex. Deeply in debt, Maguchi broke into Masaki's archive looking for something valuable to sell. Coming upon what appeared to be a 10000 Yen bill, but which was actually the paper Demon of Greed named Salem. Maguchi stole it and spent it, unwittingly making a contract with the demon. Later, Itsuki and his friends made an investigation into the theft and Maguchi was discovered.

Confronted by Masaki, Maguchi broke down and confessed his deed; he was later shocked when Itsuki showed to him how the 10000 Yen bill had returned to his wallet, explaining his contract. Maguchi decided to keep Salem anyway and attempted to leave with him, only for a college student on a bike to crash into him and steal the bag. As a result, he was sent to the hospital for a week.

After getting out, Maguchi stood by with all the demons and Itsuki's friends in Masaki's archive and he watched as Itsuki broke his contract using a story about their adventures. Itsuki encouraged Masaki to write his own story to break his contract next.[2]

Upon the advice of the fortune teller Hosoyama, Maguchi began doing good deeds to balance out his contract; among these was buying the clockwork ram Deus for the student Hadzuki Mana at a toy shop. Later on, he ran into Itsuki and his friends, and he explained his reasons for doing good deeds.[1]

Rahab

AviRahab

Rahab[note 11] was one of the paper demons living in Masaki's archive, the Demon of Envy and a copy of Rahab Barisol. At some point, she befriended Masaki's sister Kyouko.[2] After Itsuki unwittingly contracted with Marie, Masaki introduced Rahab and Gilles to Itsuki while explaining the nature of the paper demons. When Itsuki later tried to break his contract by presenting a story for all the demons to accept, Rahab, supposedly on a whim, refused to accept it and forced them to have Tomozou accept the story.[2]

Secretly, however, Rahab didn't want Itsuki to become the scribe without Kyouko's permission. Rahab was later present when Kyouko, Itsuki and Tsugumi consulted with the paper demons on how to stop another demon contractor, Mana. Following the conclusion of the incident, Rahab listened to Kayoko vent about it, apologizing for not accepting Itsuki's story two months ago and revealing her reasons for doing so.[2]

Salem

AviSalem

Salem[note 12] was one of the paper demons living in Masaki's archive and a copy of Salem Dunbar. Being the Demon of Greed, Salem presented himself as a 10000 Yen bill to a broke lawyer, Maguchi, when he came into the archive looking for valuables. As a result, Maguchi stole Salem and "spent" him, unwittingly forging a contract. Salem returned to Maguchi's wallet afterwards.

After Maguchi learned the truth about Salem, he attempted to flee with him, only for a college student to steal the demon instead. Salem was soon recovered and returned to the archive by Itsuki. He was later one of the demons who accepted the story Itsuki wrote to break his contract.[2] Two months later, his contract still continued with Maguchi.[1]

Sudou Kayoko

AviKayoko

Sudou Kayoko[note 13], also known by her SNS screen name Elluka,[note 14] was the mother of Haruto and the ex-wife of Masaki. During the Meta Escape Incident, she, Masaki and Kyouko worked together to fight wraiths, with Kayoko using her powers as a scribe as part of the Tokitou clan. She later married Masaki and had a child with him, Haruto, before the two had a divorce. She also, at some point, founded an IT startup, with its headquarters being in Maruo City.[1]

Later on, Haruto contacted her on SNS using the screen name "Leon," explaining that he had a friend possessed by a demon and needed help. Kayoko was able to identify the demon in question as being a "paper demon," and she claimed that she could provide an exorcism for a fee.[2] When Kayoko was contacted by Kyouko, Itsuki and Tsugumi regarding another demon contractor, Mana, Kayoko met with them at her company's headquarters and explained how she had fought wraiths twenty years ago using her powers as a scribe; with Itsuki also being a scribe, Kayoko gave him special paper to stop Mana with.[1]

Tokitou Haruto

AviHaruto

Tokitou Haruto[note 15], screen name "Leon,"[note 16] was the son of Masaki and Kayoko and the cousin of Itsuki. Living close to his father's secret archive, Haruto learned about the demons stored inside, although he kept the knowledge to himself. Later, Itsuki and his family came to live in the Tokitou's apartment complex. When Itsuki himself contracted with one of the demons, Haruto began secretly trying to help his cousin break his contract from behind the scenes. This including going online to consult with his mother.

Haruto later joined Itsuki in trying to track down the person who'd stolen Salem; after Maguchi was discovered as the thief, and was accosted by another thief on a bike, Haruto called an ambulance for him. Some time after Salem was recovered, he dropped by to chat with Itsuki and revealed his knowledge of the demons, as well as how he'd been trying to help with the contract secretly. About a week later, he was one of the ones who stood by and watched as Itsuki broke the contract using a story of their adventures.[2]

After school started two months later, Haruto was among the boys falling under the influence of Hadzuki Mana's Lust spell, treating her like their queen. During the incident, Haruto explained to Mana upon her insistence that Itsuki had moved due to being bullied at his old school. When Mana was later confronted by Itsuki, Haruto and the other male students went to stop him, although Haruto briefly broke free of the spell and defended Itsuki. He then handed Itsuki's story over to Mana, making her read it and breaking her demon contract with the wraith Deus.

Following the end of the incident, Haruto, Itsuki and Tsugumi were taken by Mana to the toy shop she bought Deus from, only for them to discover it to have vanished.[1]

Tokitou Masaki

Itsuki's family temporarily moved into Masaki's apartment complex while theirs was being renovated. During this time, Masaki entrusted Itsuki with a key to the archive,[2] intending for him to become a scribe by forging a contact with a paper demon.[1] When Itsuki accidentally forged a contract with Marie, Masaki confronted him directly about his being in the archive; he also introduced some of the other demons to Itsuki, and explained to him the rules of contracting.

When he later discovered Salem was stolen from the archive, Masaki enlisted the help of Itsuki and his friends to find the culprit, who turned out to be a college student also living in the complex. After recovering Salem, Masaki helped break Itsuki's contract by getting out all the demons to accept the boy's story offering.[2] Later on, he went away for two weeks, hiring Kyouko to manage the apartments in his stead.[1]

Tomozou

AviTomozou

Tomozou[note 18] is a wolf spirit Shikigami and Tsugumi's protector. While Tsugumi was meeting a newly-contracted Itsuki, Tomozou helped her fend off a potential kidnapper. He later accompanied his master on the search for the stolen demon Salem. After Itsuki wrote up a story to break his contract with the demon Marie, Tomozou accepted the story when Rahab refused to and allowed the boy to break the contract.[2]

Vlad

AviVlad
