- "Even so... I was Josephine. Princess Riliane's beloved horse. Her loyal servant. I always have been, and always will be."
- ―Josephine confirming her identity[src]
Josephine, originally Enif Yggdra, was the daughter of Held Yggdra and a former resident of the Second Period, later reborn as a forest spirit in the form of a horse in the Third Period. After her mother died giving birth to her, Queen Anne Lucifen d'Autriche ordered her death, considering the foal to be an omen of bad luck; however, due to Princess Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche showing compassion for the newborn foal, Anne spared her life and allowed Riliane to adopt her. The princess grew attached to her and kept her in the royal stables as her favorite horse.
History[]
Early life[]
Born in the Second Period, Enif Yggdra was the child of renowned professor Held Yggdra and his wife. Raised and doted on by their loving parents, Enif lived a happy life, but began to develop Hereditary Evil Raiser Syndrome.[1] Desperate to cure them, Held sought help from Seth Twiright, only for Seth to end up becoming a HERs as well. As the Second Period began to collapse due to HERs contaminating the world, Enif's father presumably managed to secure a place for them and their mother on one of several spaceships intended to travel to inhabitable planets and repopulate them, theirs under the name Climb One.[2] Later on, they and 61 other crewmembers on the Climb One, were later killed during the creation of the Third Period. Held then used their preserved spirit data to make them reincarnate as forest spirits in Held's Forest[2] in BT 528.[3]
Royal Steed[]
- "Mother…I don’t understand. I don’t get it! Why are you going to kill this foal!? Isn’t this the only child of Françoise…Your most beloved horse?"
- ―Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche[src]
Through unknown means, Enif was reborn in the royal stables of the Lucifenian Royal Palace in EC 495. Born as a foal to Françoise, the most beloved horse of Queen Anne Lucifen d'Autriche, the birthing process ultimately killed her mother. After seeing her horse die, Anne studied the foal and noted that her coat was gray unlike her mothers and that she was intersex. Believing her to be cursed, Anne ordered the stable man, Jaime, to kill her. Before the deed could be done, Anne's daughter, Riliane, burst into the stables, having seen Jaime carry a blade in, and clung to the foal, pleading with her mother to let it live as it was all that was left of the Queen's favorite horse. After consulting the mage Elluka Clockworker, who declared that the foal was not cursed, Anne let her daughter keep it. Riliane then named the foal Josephine.[4]

Riliane fleeing from the palace on Josephine
On December 27, EC 499, Riliane took Josephine and rode away to a nameless beach; despite the rocky road, she was able to make the journey without getting tired. While on the beach, Riliane began to vent her grief over her mother's passing and frustration with Leonhart Avadonia. Josephine then mused on Riliane's maturity, believing that ruling a country was too hard of a role to be placed on a child of her age, feeling sorrowful for the girl.[4] Soon the new servant of the palace, Allen Avadonia, found the pair and began to escort them back.[5]
Towards the end of the Lucifenian Revolution, Josephine carried the disguised Riliane away from the palace. After entering the Millenium Forest, Josephine was struck by an arrow by the revolutionaries and collapsed. Unable to carry her master anymore, Josephine pushed Riliane away, hoping the girl would understand that she was telling her to run and save herself. Sometime after Riliane left, Josephine was approached by Eater Sabella in his bear form. While he treated her wound, she began to tell her story to him.[4] After she healed up, the two spirits parted ways, and the horse would be found by Clarith who brought her with her to the Held Monastery. Josephine would live there for ten years before passing away with Riliane by her side.[6]
Afterlife[]
After her death, her soul ascended to the Heavenly Yard and she remained there. After the destruction and merging of the Third Period and the Hellish Yard by Punishment, Josephine's soul was dragged down to the ground world. Sometime after, Clarith rode Josephine to the Lucifenian Royal Palace to retrieve Allen on Michaela's orders. She was later mounted by Riliane once again when Clarith fetched her to save her from Tasan Party soldiers.[7]
Personality and Traits[]
Josephine was loyal and dedicated, fully obedient to her mistress. With no memories of her life in the Second Period, Josephine saw herself as a horse, but did not consider herself a normal one, not really being able to connect or communicate with other horses. Regardless, she took great pride in being Riliane's steed and was happy to spend the rest of her mortal life with the girl. She did however recognize some aspects of her former life, knowing who Eater Sabella was and recognizing Held as her father even in his tree form.
Character Connections[]
Riliane Lucifen d'Autriche: Josephine's owner. Josephine loved Riliane dearly, being grateful to the girl who showed her mercy and allowed her life to be spared. The mare remained loyal to the girl for her entire life, saving her as the revolution broke out and was willing to sacrifice her life for her after getting shot while escaping.
Held Yggdra: Enif's father. Happy with him in her first life, Enif only retained faint memories of him in her life as Josephine, being able to recognize him as a father despite believing him to be a stranger.
Eater Sabella: Josephine's saviour in the Millennium Tree Forest. Though they had known each other in her life as Enif, she couldn't recall enough to not be frightened when first met him in bear form as Josephine. After realizing he meant no harm, she allowed him to tend to her wounds and he listened to her recounting her life story.

Trivia[]
Conceptualization and Origin[]
- Her birth name, Enif, is another name for Epsilion Pegasi, the brightest star in the Pegasus contellation.
- Josephine being Riliane's most beloved horse is a reference to the road roller, a vehicle often described as the Kagamine twins' most beloved car, mothy stating he couldn't give Riliane an actual Road Roller due to the setting.[8]
