Gumina Glassred was an aristocrat of the Beelzenian Empire residing in Asmodean and one of Sateriasis Venomania's many victims. A childhood friend of Cherubim and his brother, Gumina grew opposed to her betrothal to Sateriasis. Scorning Cherubim to avoid his brother murdering him, Gumina was later enchanted and abducted by the Duke, becoming the sixth member of his harem.

History

Early Life

"Lasaland is a rainy place. I hated it when I was a child."
―Gumina Glassred[src]

Born in EC 115 as the daughter of the Glassred Family, Gumina was raised by her father, the Marquis, learning how to paint and play the violin. She later met and became close friends with her betrothed, Sateriasis Venomania, calling him "Sati" whenever they were in private.[1] On October 16, EC 123, Gumina snuck out of her home and met up with Sateriasis in a forest near Lasaland during the night. Meeting his deformed brother,[2] the three played together as friends through the capital's Workshop Street.

Over the years, the two brothers often snuck out of the mansion to play with Gumina at Workshop Street despite the adults chastising them for interfering. During the period, Gumina met an old painter and often watched him paint portraits around the district. Seeing Sateriasis always watching the Gine Workshop make dolls, she one time teased that boys who liked dolls were weird, earning his anger; she also noticed the deformed brother always watching the blacksmiths work.

The three continued to remain close when the deformed boy was finally released from house arrest as a servant and given the name "Cherubim"; Gumina then began calling him "Cheri". Knowing about his romantic feelings for her, Gumina agreed to not speak about her marriage to Sateriasis in front of Cherubim. At some point, she learned the old painter gave Cherubim a portrait for himself. Around EC 133, Carol Shields was hired as Gumina's bodyguard and often accompanied her wherever she went; over time, the two grew close as the maid watched Gumina while she socialized with the Venomania brothers.[3]

Around late EC 135, Gumina began to resent her betrothal to Sateriasis as being only her parent's decision, attempting to break off their engagement. She later overheard her fiancé and one of his subordinates planning to assassinate Cherubim at a party in December of that year. Learning that Sateriasis believed she had fallen for his deformed brother, Gumina worried for her friend. When Cherubim approached Gumina later on, she noticed Sateriasis was behind them, watching.[4]

The aristocrat then told the servant it would be best if they didn't see each other again. As the surprised Cherubim continued to pry about why, Gumina's face became more sullen and scoffed how irritatingly obtuse he was, explaining that she never liked him and felt like puking while being near him. Forcing a warped smile, she cruelly told her friend to get his ugly face away from her,[5] hoping it would throw off Sateriasis' suspicions.[6]

Meeting Duke Venomania

"You should have supported Duke Venomania after the incident from the beginning. You haven’t even gone to the mansion to see his face even once."
―Marquis Glassred to Gumina[src]

Afterward, Gumina heard that the Venomania household was massacred by an unknown assailant the day after the party, leaving Sateriasis as the only survivor but without his memory. Terrified by the implications, Gumina avoided visiting the new Duke Venomania. In March of EC 136, Gumina was traversing the halls when her father shouted for her. Stepping out of the shadows of the corridor, the young woman quietly answered her father's summons. When the Marquis stated he was leaving for the Venomania manor and that she would join him, the perplexed girl questioned it.

Her father then lectured that she should've been supporting Sateriasis in the wake of the incident from the beginning, pointing out her failure to visit his mansion to see him even once since then. As he expressed his disappointment in her, Gumina hesitantly argued she had her own reasons before the Marquis interjected that he had only overlooked her actions because the Duke had been alienating himself from others. Exclaiming he was at his limit, the Glassred patriarch ordered her to fulfill her duties as Venomania's fiancée, hurrying her to come along as he left. Giving up trying to explain, Gumina timidly obeyed and followed her father.

Once they and several servants traveled to the estate, Gumina waited just outside the door while the Glassred patriarch greeted the Duke. After Sateriasis invited her father to talk with him in another room, Gumina heard her father tell her to come too and came inside, greeting the duke. Joining them in the drawing room, the melancholy girl silently sat beside her father and kept her head low while the two conversed about the recent women disappearances in Asmodean.

After Venomania confirmed his memories hadn't fully returned and that he didn't remember Gumina, she listened to her father say she'd be living with her fiancé from then on. Shocked, Gumina heard her father say he'd have her belongings brought over when Saterasis stopped and asked he give him more time. Watching the two argue over his decision to remain at the mansion alone for longer, she finally spoke up to break the following awkward silence, relating to her father that the duke's anguish might be worse than they thought.

As she advised they not rush the matter, Marquis Glassred yelled for her to be quiet before finally calming down and agreeing that she was right. When Sateriasis agreed to still meet with his childhood friend to possibly recover his memories, the marquis inquired if she was okay with the arrangement as well. Gumina nodded her approval and her father excused them, reasoning he had political affairs the Duke would have to eventually attend to in the morning. Afterward, they returned home with their servants.[7]

A Date through Town

"I liked looking at this old man’s pictures like this. You'd have a good look at the Gine workshop. You got really angry when I said, "A boy who likes stuff like doll workshops's weird.""
"I see... that might've been the case."
"And then... he'd always be peering at the blacksmiths."
―Gumina and Sateriasis[src]

Three days later, Duke Venomania visited the Glassred manor to meet up with Gumina. As Sateriasis considered where to have their date, Gumina suggested they stroll through Lasaland, describing how they used to slip out and play in town and that he might remember something about his past re-experiencing it. When the Marquis refused to have them go there alone, they agreed to have Carol accompany them as a bodyguard.

After the maid reacquainted herself with the amnesic duke, Gumina hurried "Sati" and the three traveled to Lasaland. During the trip, Gumina made small talk and told silly stories with her fiancé. Once they arrived in town, Gumina led them to Workshop Street. Seeing the bustling avenue at work, Gumina questioned if he remembered how they'd always play there despite the artisans' complaining.

Gumina then saw the old painter and called out to him. Running over to the man, she looked at his canvas and questioned if he was drawing Workshop Street and the painter answered that he wanted to do landscapes for once. When Sateriasis and Carol joined them, Gumina recalled what their habitual playing and teasing Sateriasis about his love for dolls and the Duke admitted that may have been so.

Remembering Cherubim, Gumina look solemnly toward the west where his mansion was, recalling how he used to watch the blacksmiths. After the painter joined in lamenting his apparent death, Sateriasis grabbed Gumina's right wrist and asked who she was talking about. Shocked that he even forgot "Cheri", the noble suddenly pushed him into the back alley. Giving Carol a single glare not follow them, Gumina went into the alley and dove into her fiancé's chest, revealing that Cherubim was his older brother.[8]

Vengeful Demon

"Gumina... at last. At last, every part of you will be mine. Your face, your legs, your breasts, and even your heart―"
―Duke Venomania[src]

After Sateriasis returned the two girls to the Glassred Mansion and left, Marquis Glassred departed to meet with the Beelzenian Imperial Family in Rukolbeni. During the middle of the night, Carol and Gumina heard noises and screams throughout the mansion and recognized something was wrong. While Carol went to check out the noise, Gumina took a knife for self-defense and hid in a room. Crouching and trembling in the corner, the aristocrat deduced a thief broke into the mansion. Reminded of the Venomania household massacre, she worried it was the same culprit and that she would die.

Once she heard footsteps steadily approach the room, the terrified girl mentally begged for their owner to not enter. After she did, the girl yelped before realizing it was Carol. Seeing she looked unharmed, the noble put a hand to her chest in relief and approached her, asking what was going on. Once Carol flatly told her they needed to go, explaining they were heading to the Venomania Mansion, the maid quickly went around and restrained the noble's arms behind her back. As Gumina expressed her surprise, she saw Sateriasis poke his head inside the entrance to the room with horns and fangs and became speechless.

Looking upon her fiancé's clawed and winged form, the aristocrat demanded to know what was going on before remarking about his monstrous form. As Venomania asked if they were ready to go his mansion and harem, the girl vainly struggled to get free of Carol's grip, screaming for him to stay away. As Sateriasis slowly approached her, ominously laughing that every part of her was finally his, Gumina flailed her limbs and wildly struggled with all her might, continuing to scream for him to get his ugly face away from her.

Sateriasis then questioned her claim he was "ugly" and teased that she was awful. Leaning his face close to hers while his fanged mouth dripped saliva before her eyes, he pointed out that she was the ugly one for falling for another man. Once Duke Venomania's eyes turned red and invoked his Lust spell, the maid was brainwashed to fall in love with the noble.

Venomania Event

Afterward, the two followed the duke back to his mansion and joined his harem, living in the basement with the other concubines.[9] Moving into one of the rooms in the basement, Gumina began regularly spending her time with Sateriasis whenever he visited the harem; she eventually received a new pink dress tailored by Lukana Octo and began wearing it for the Duke's pleasure. When the noble began being treated harshly by Mikulia Greeonio, the aristocrat met with the peasant with disdain in kind. When Lukana attempted to reconcile the two's differences, Gumina failed to be convinced otherwise.

As time progressed, Gumina began painting portraits of her lover. At some point, Gumina ordered Carol to search for Cherubim's portrait and the servant complied, hanging the painting in her room. One day, Gumina decided to play violin in her room to kill boredom, stopping once she heard someone knock at the door. After giving her permission, Gumina saw Lukana enter and apologize for disturbing her; the noble replied that she didn't mind, admitting she was just passing the time. Met with praise for her skill, Gumina heard the tailor ask if she practiced any other aristocratic hobbies and the woman noted she did paint while directing her to Cherubim's portrait.

Later that day, Lukana returned with Duke Venomania and he interrogated her about the painting. After admitting her and Carol's deeds, Gumina quietly watched in sorrow while the furious duke burnt Cherubim's portrait in the fireplace. When Venomania ordered her to come over to him, the noble obeyed and the duke pulled her into his embrace.[10] After sharing a passionate kiss, she stared lovingly into his eyes as he called her cute.[11] As he warned her to only look at him, Sateriasis activated his Lust spell and brainwashed her to forget everything involving Cherubim.[12]

Journey to Mystica

In April, Gumina stood beside Sateriasis' throne while he attended to his harem. After I.R. arrived and the two prepared to leave for Mystica, the noblewoman grabbed his arm and looked longingly into his eyes. Promising he'd return soon, the Duke shared a passionate kiss with her before he departed.[13]

Sometime after, Gumina noticed Lukana seemed distracted and asked what was wrong. The concubine stated she thought she heard it raining outside and Gumina explained that it was characteristic of Lasaland, describing her childhood hatred for it. Lukana replied that it was ultimately unimportant since their residence was what Venomania wished. Reminded of "Sati", Gumina worried for him when the tailor assured her that Mystica was always sunny.[14]

She later played the violin in the basement's dining room to drown out the rain. While reminiscing on her childhood habit, she questioned why she couldn't recall any memories of Sateriasis as a child.[15]After Sateriasis returned, they continued to be beside him to appease his desires.[16]

When the disguised Karchess Crim stabbed Venomania in EC 137, Gumina broke free of his spell and began to flee the mansion with the others. The last to leave, she lingered behind for just a second longer to look upon the collapsed and dying Venomania. Seeing the broken man's face to be that of Cherubim, the noble realized it had been him who had seduced them. As the duke reached out and breathlessly called for her attention, Gumina turned to escape, certain he had been trying to confess his love to her.[17]

Later Life

"In the end, Gumina didn't answer any of Carol's questions. But, she did show a lonely smile."
―Elluka's observations of Gumina and Cherubim's relationship from her memoirs[src]

Soon after Venomania's death, Gumina began to face persecution from devout Levin followers for having been his mistress.[18] Shortly afterward, she fled to Elphegort with her father and Carol, seeking asylum with relatives in the Green Country. After settling there, the aristocrat became a minister of the government.[19] That same year, she became an active follower of Levin as part of the Held sect and began to regularly make pilgrimages to the Tree of Held.[20]

Gumina continues her painting hobby in Elphegort

As time progressed, Gumina continued painting portraits of Duke Venomania at her new estate in Elphegort, the walls of the room soon becoming filled with new paintings of him. At some point, she recovered the burnt paintings of Cherubim from the Venomania estate and hung them in the room as well.

In EC 138, while painting another portrait of the Duke of Lust, she recalled Cherubim from before and thought about their relationship before and after his change. Once she finished the painting, Gumina discerned neither of them realized they had wanted to love the real him. Holding the portrait in her arms, she reflected that her love might have been why she kept painting him so much and made another lonely smile before shedding a tear.[21]

The following year, Gumina met with a woman and recognized her to be Lukana. Conversing with her, Gumina explained what happened since she fled from the Duke's mansion and what had transpired between her, Cherubim, and Sateriasis. When Carol questioned if she attempted to destroy the engagement out of love for Cherubim, Gumina asked why she thought that and the maid noted that it was simply her impression while watching them over the years. Gumina then remained silent before making a lonely smile; Lukana left shortly after.[22]

Gumina later became Elphegort's first woman prime minister and an advocate for improving women's status within Elphegort.[23] Sometime after Earl Gilbert Calgaround married Mikulia Greeonio in EC 147, Gumina traveled to Calgaround to visit the couple. While there, the prime minister had the two pose for a portrait; after finishing the painting, she gave them the work before leaving.[24] At some point, Gumina married, as customary for a woman of her status,[25] and gave birth to a child.[26]

Afterlife

"Miss Gumina, are you living in this mansion right now?"
"Yeah, I guess."
"Do you believe you are not on good terms with Duke Venomania now?"
"..."
―Allen Avadonia and Gumina[src]

Following her death, Gumina was sent to the Heavenly Yard and remained there. In EC 998, she and the other souls were pulled back to the Third Period as the ground world merged with the Hellish Yard.[27] Afterward, the girl returned to Duke Venomania's mansion in Lasaland and agreed to rejoin Sateriasis' harem along with Lukana, Mikulia, and Maylis. Later on, Gumina left the mansion with a canvas and her painting supplies before returning to the mansion some time after.

As she approached the entrance, she saw a boy and a demon walk out of the manor. Assuming he was an acquaintance of Sateriasis, the woman gave him a small nod as they passed. When the boy suddenly inquired if she was Gumina Glassred, the woman admitted she was before questioning if he knew her. Once the boy detailed her history as Sateriasis' fiancée and later the prime minister of Elphegort, asking if he was close, Gumina nodded.

Curious, she tilted her head and inquired if they met before. When the boy confirmed it was their first meeting, Gumina attempted to ask how he knew so much about her but was interrupted, told it wasn't important. The child then questioned if she was living in the mansion and the aristocrat weakly confirmed she was. When he then asked if she was on good terms with Duke Venomania, Gumina remained silent.

She then listened to the boy insist she should know that the love of his childhood friend was what the duke had truly wanted and not the face and lust he was obsessed with. Angered, Gumina meekly responded that his concern was unnecessary and walked past him into the mansion. As she closed the door, the girl quietly muttered if they could only start over.[28] Some time after, the Master of the Hellish Yard visited and took Venomania back to the bowels of the Hellish Yard.[29]

Legacy

Due to her success as Prime Minister, Gumina set a precedent for women in politics and the trend spread from Elphegort to its neighboring nations over the next few centuries,[30] with it being an "era for women" to some male aristocrats by the turn of the 6th century EC.[31] Gumina's bloodline eventually led to Banica Conchita, who later became famed for her contributions to Beelzenian culture and society as both "Gourmet Noble Banica" and "Evil Food Eater Conchita".[32] When Gumillia was incarnated as a human in EC 499, the forest spirit chose to be incarnated with Gumina's appearance, remembering the time the spirit witnessed her pray to Held at the Millennium Tree.[33]

Gumina's painting of Mikulia and Gilbert Calgaround was left hanging in Calgaround's royal library during the centuries after her death. Schuburg Newspaper reporter Hanne Lorre later visited the painting to confirm the connection between Calgaround's Mikulia and the girl from the Venomania Event, prompting her to further investigate the suspicious stories surrounding the Flower of the Plateau.[34]

Personality and Traits

"She grew up in a different environment. It's unavoidable. But I'm sure you guys can become good friends."
―Lukana to Mikulia[src]

Gumina was an elegant but independent woman, wishing to live her own life. Well-bred and raised in an aristocratic family, the noblewoman conducted herself as someone befitting her status, acting with grace and sophistication. Because of her upbringing, she could be stubborn and didn't get along with those of different backgrounds, such as the lower classed Mikulia and Lolan. Despite this, Gumina connected with Lukana during their time in Duke Venomania's harem and felt comfortable confiding her worries to her.[35] Similarly, she seemingly repaired her poor relations with Mikulia after her marriage to Gilbert Calgaround.

Gumina acted somewhat rebellious since childhood, sneaking out at night to play with her friends, Sateriasis and Cherubim.[36] Growing up to become strong-willed and individualistic, the aristocrat yearned to live her own life and make her own choices for herself. As a result, she began to resent her arranged marriage with Sateriasis, rebelling against her parents for forcing the decision upon her. Following the Venomania Event, Gumina took charge of her family and social status, setting a new precedent as Elphegort's first female Prime Minister.[37]

However, Gumina was kind and amiable with her friends and family, particularly Sateriasis and Cherubim. In spite of his deformity, Gumina cared for Cherubim, and affectionately referred to Sateriasis as "Sati" since childhood. However, though considerate of her friends' feelings for her, Gumina refused to let her betrothal to Saterasis dictate her life, creating a tear between them. In reverse, Gumina agreed to keep her arranged marriage a secret from Cherubim, hoping not to upset him.

Still, Gumina's stubbornness occasionally made her quarrelsome, further dividing her and her friends from each other. Regardless, after hearing of Sateriasis' plan to assassinate his brother, Gumina chose to feign a cold and apathetic disdain for Cherubim to throw off Sati's suspicions, though hurt and bothered by her own words. While under Duke Venomania's brainwashing, Gumina believed herself to be in love with Sati and even forwent her independent nature for the sake of their love.[38] However, after being freed of his control, the aristocrat left the Duke to his death, although briefly hesitating to look back on her friend and "lover".

Since she was a child, Gumina enjoyed more artistic activities like painting or playing the violin,[39] and loved wearing white western dresses befitting the aristocratic style of the time.[40] In contrast, she hated the rain and always played the violin during a storm to drown out the sound of rainfall.[41] She also demonstrated a deep religious faith following her freedom from Venomania's harem, often making pilgrimages the Tree of Held once she fled to Elphegort.[42]

Skills and Abilities

Aside from being well educated and attractive as befitting her noble status, Gumina was accomplished in artistic fields during her upbringing, excelling as a painter and violinist in adulthood.[43] As a result of her creative nature, the girl also showed a degree of craftiness at a young age, able to sneak out at night, alone and undetected, in order to play with Sateriasis and Cherubim.[44] Because of her birthright, Gumina also had many resources at her disposal, including her loyal servant Carol Shields, who acted as her bodyguard.[45]

Gumina was also well-versed in politics and excelled in the field following her flight to Elphegort, able to earn the position as prime minister in the kingdom despite the social stigma she faced for her gender and past as one of Venomania's harem members. She also impressed her constituents during her time as minister, setting a precedent for women in positions of power that would continue for centuries.[46] In addition to this, Gumina was also able to inspire deep loyalty in her servant, such that the Duke's orders prioritized lower than Gumina's even under the brainwashing.[47]

Character Connections

Sateriasis Venomania: Gumina's childhood friend and cousin. Gumina cultivated a friendship with Sateriasis in childhood, although she did not love him enough to wish to marry him, and her regard for him ended after his planned assassination of Cherubim. When enchanted by the power of Lust, she fell in love with "Sateriasis" and joined his harem, but after he was killed she came to her senses and fled, realizing who he really was.

Cherubim: Gumina's childhood friend. Gumina cultivated a friendship with Cherubim in her childhood and came to care deeply for him, to the point of cursing him publicly when the latter was to be assassinated by the jealous Sateriasis. Under the power of Lust, she became enchanted with him and joined his harem, believing him to be his brother; seeing his face return to normal, Gumina understood what she had lost and mourned for her friend, realizing that she loved him before his change and continuing to paint his true face.

Lukana Octo: A fellow member of Venomania's harem. Gumina got along with Lukana to an extent during their time enchanted by the duke, confiding her hatred of rain to her while the duke was away. After being freed, she continued to trust Lukana, choosing to confide in her the troubles that had occurred between her, Cherubim, and Sateriasis.

Mikulia Greeonio: A fellow member of Venomania's harem. Gumina and Mikulia had a difficult relationship while both were enchanted by the duke, due to their differing backgrounds.

Lolan Eve: A fellow member of Venomania's harem. Gumina and Lolan had a difficult relationship while both were enchanted by the duke.

Carol Shields: A servant of Gumina. Gumina had a close relationship with Carol as master and servant, the latter usually accompanying the former and caring for her when the Marquis was away. Carol was very loyal to Gumina, to the point of prioritizing her will over Venomania's even under the duke's spell.

Trivia

Conceptualization and Origin

  • Gumina's surname is a kenning for a "red glass" and is likely a reference to the red glasses worn by her representative Vocaloid.
  • Gumina's name is partially inspired by the name of her representative Vocaloid, GUMI, with both names sharing the first four letters.

Curiosities

  • Despite being his childhood crush, it is unknown if Venomania gave Gumina an emerald necklace to indicate she was one of his "favorites".
  • A Freezis Fairy Tale inspired by Duke Venomania is titled "The Duke and the Four Women", likely a reference to Lukana, Mikulia, Gumina, and Maylis' prominent appearance with Sateriasis in various media.
