Galleriancorruption

The Dark Star Scandal was the name given to the corruption that plagued the Dark Star Bureau from EC 980 until the end of the Leviantan Civil War three years later. Allowed to thrive under the jurisdiction of Chief Justice Gallerian Marlon, the incident became among the most infamous in the history of the Union State of Evillious.

History

Origins

Following his wife and daughter's tragic deaths in EC 978, USE Dark Star Bureau Director Gallerian Marlon became wracked with grief. Two years later, the judge consulted his longtime friend Ma regarding her earlier claim that collecting all the vessels of sin would grant the collector any wish. Certain the Clockworker's Doll was Michelle, the judge agreed to help Ma collect the vessels of sin to heal his disable-legged "daughter".[1]

Ignoble Dealings

Presiding over the Spoon Corruption case, Gallerian identified the Marlon Spoon as one of his required vessels. As a result of the jurisdiction, he confiscated the spoon and kept it for himself. Around this time, the Dark Star Bureau was privatized,[2] leading Gallerian to accept bribes to judge aristocrats innocent for their crimes; similarly, kickbacks were accepted to falsely indict enemies of the nobles and present phony evidence that would convict the innocent accused.

With the corruption spreading to many officials within the court, Gallerian was free to profit off his deceitful rulings.[3] Around the same time, Gallerian established the PN espionage force, recruiting agents and delegating orders as its "Master" through his aide, Bruno Zero.[4] After being convicted by Gallerian of criminal offenses, Nemesis Sudou was recruited as "No. 8" in exchange for exemption from the death penalty.[5] As time progressed, PN successfully completed numerous assassinations for Gallerian.[6]

Scherzer Event

Sometime during his career, he was bribed by the famed celebrity Scherzer and judged him not guilty of assaulting a woman. Later on, Gallerian received a tip from Ma that a whistleblower had claimed Scherzer was responsible for a number of female disappearances. Gallerian immediately tracked the whistleblower to Scherzer's financial manager, Bogaerts, and confirmed the celebrity was kidnapping and defiling numerous women in his suburban mansion.

Promised the celebrity's entire fortune for his execution, Gallerian agreed to the bribe and sent a police squad to investigate the premises and arrest Scherzer. The celebrity later broke into his mansion, asking to be saved again. After misleading Scherzer into believing he would help him for ten times the previous bribe, Gallerian judged the man guilty for the crimes and had him executed.[7]

Vessel Collection

In EC 982, Gallerian confirmed the Venom Sword was in the possession of Nyoze Octo and convicted the second lieutenant of multiple homicides. Confiscating the weapon as evidence, the judge secretly stored it in his personal treasury in his home before giving the vessel to Ma several days later.[8] On his collaborator's suggestion,[9] Gallerian ordered the construction of a small theater to be built on the premises of an abandoned property in the Millennium Tree Forest to store the vessels.[10]

Later that year, he began collecting each of the Four Mirrors of Lucifenia. Later on, he discovered the Glass of Conchita and one of the mirrors was at the local Graveyard restaurant and dispatched a warrant for the workers' arrest, confiscating the vessels for himself and closing down the establishment.[11] At some point, Gallerian discovered Nyoze Octo had escaped confinement and began searching for his location.

After construction of Evil's Theater was completed in December of EC 982, all the vessels in Gallerian's possession were moved there. Around the same time, Bruno Zero tracked the fugitive Nyoze to Rolled, hiding with his lover, Nemesis Sudou. Later that month, No. 8 was ordered to kill her lover and completed the mission.[12] By the summer of EC 983, the infamous Marlon collected six of the seven vessels and garnered a fortune from his shady dealings.[13]

Leviantan Civil War

Main Article: Leviantan Civil War

In August of that year, General Tony Ausdin was charged with serial murder and placed under Gallerian's jurisdiction. After accepting the bribe and judging the general innocent, his corruption had come to light. Riots broke out in the streets of Levianta in opposition to the injustice. General Ausdin was brutally killed in the chaos,[14] followed by the rioters setting fire to Gallerian's home.[15] Trapped in a confrontation with Nemesis, Gallerian was killed.[16]

Aftermath

After the riots had been suppressed, the mangled corpse of General Ausdin was discovered in his backyard.[17] As the sole benefactor in his will, Ma inherited Gallerian's remaining collection in his home before disappearing from the public eye a few days later.[18] The rest of the collection was stored in the small movie theater thereafter and was largely ignored until being rediscovered in EC 990, leading many to go missing after entering the Millennium Tree Forest in search of Gallerian's vast fortune.[19]

Civilian Perception

With known criminals and murderers being exonerated while innocent citizens were being convicted, public opinion for Gallerian quickly plummeted in the years of the scandal, and the uproar by the corruption plaguing the Dark Star Bureau eventually led to civil war.[20] In the years after his death, his existence in the bureau became a blemish in the USE's history that was often spoken about.[21] Because of the vast fortune he collected from his corrupt dealings and personal collection of the vessels of sin, he was regarded by later generations as the "Collector".[22]
