"It’s one of my strong suits to always carry with me such baseless confidence…"
―King Arth[src]

Arth Lucifen d'Autriche, known posthumously as Arth I, was the last king of the Kingdom of Lucifenia and the father of Riliane and Alexiel. Transplanted into a mud doll after dying in his youth, the prince embarked on a large-scale conquest to expand Lucifenia's borders and later married Anne Swee, making her his queen. Throughout his many battles, the king earned the loyalty and friendship of his closest retainers, the Three Heroes.

History[]

Early Life[]

"The valiant prince, Arth Lucifen d'Autriche. Overcoming the opposition of his father, the king, he had begun to expand our territory by declaring war on our surrounding countries, one by one."
―Prim Marlon regarding Arth's youth[src]

Born in the Kingdom of Lucifenia in EC 457 as a member of the Lucifenian Royal Family, Prince Arth met Prim Rogzé and her best friend, Anne Swee, during his childhood, becoming close friends with them.[1] Sometime in the early EC 470s, Arth and his parents were killed when their carriage fell off a cliff near the Millennium Tree Forest.[2] Arth awoke on the back of the forest spirit Lich; as the prince pleaded with the spirit to bring him back to life, Lich "revived" him by putting Arth's soul into a body made of mud.

Arth was thus transformed into a golem. Following this, he would occasionally meet with Lich so the spirit could work on his body, in a simulation of aging.[3] With his new body Arth took control of the government and began planning to expand his kingdom's dominion to unite the Evillious region. He eventually discarded Elphegort from his invasion plans due to the natural protection it was provided by the Lost Woods between them.[4]

Afterward, Arth declared war upon their neighbors, Asmodean and Beelzenia, and invaded one after the other. Beginning to expand Lucifenia's territories, the young prince became famous within the kingdom.[1] During this time, he fell in love with Anne; asking her to be his wife and revealing his true nature as a mud golem to her, Arth was met with her acceptance on both counts.[5] After the two were married with Prim's blessing, Arth was later officially crowned as the new king.

He met with Prim sometime after and, while drinking from his wine glass, ingested a poison she had placed in the wine. Seeming to narrowly avoid death, the king refused to let anyone remotely suspicious near him. With Prim's family known to specialize in drugs and poisons, such as the new Gift poison used on Arth, the royal couple distanced themselves from her until she left for the Kingdom of Marlon.[1]

Conquest for Lucifenia[]

"Hah, if a most splendid king like me who made Lucifenia into a great country says it, then it must be so."
―Arth touting his legacy[src]

As the years progressed, Arth and Anne's relationship became strained as they were unable to have children together.[1] In EC 477, Arth became acquainted with Leonhart Avadonia and Mariam Phutapie, defectors from Beelzenia and Asmodean, respectively. Later on, he made the two executive officers of his army. Around EC 480, Arth witnessed Beelzenia's famed Elluka Clockworker defeat Leonhart and Mariam by conjuring a windstorm; deciding to confront Elluka himself, Arth witnessed her flee to the Millennium Tree Forest.

Later on, Arth approached Elluka again, offering her to join him and serve by his side. A week later, Arth met with Leonhart, Mariam and Elluka at Sanosun Bridge, with the three swearing an oath to him.[6] After the birth of General Gaston Mouchet's daughter on August 25, EC 480, Arth permitted the highly acclaimed and distantly related commander to name her after his grandmother Empress Riliane Roses.

Around EC 482, Arth and his wife were visited by Prim, who married the King of Marlon, and now was the Queen of Marlon. During the visit, Arth was secretly brainwashed by Prim and they pursued an affair.[1] After she left, Arth and Anne's relationship improved and, by a miracle,[7] they sired twin children together on December 27, EC 485, Prince Alexiel and Princess Riliane.[8] As the war dragged on, Arth and his armies gained more and more territory; eventually capturing Retasan Fortress.[9]

In EC 489, he and the four year old Alexiel visited a market in Lucifenian with Leonhart and, encountering an old woman selling dolls in a bottle, Arth had his son pick only one doll among them to encourage thoughtful decision making.[10] Around EC 490, he posed with his wife and the "Three Heroes" for several portraits by Nikolay Tolle.[11] Around the same time, Beelzenia became weakened by the Gula Disease and Arth took the chance to invade and conquer more of the territory.[12] In EC 491,[13] Arth's mud body finally gave out during the campaign, resulting in his death,[14] and he passed away with Alexiel willed as his successor.[13]

Afterlife[]

Following his death, Arth's soul was sent to the Heavenly Yard and remained there, reunited with his wife; in his afterlife he learned that the sun god had locked Allen in the device Black Box for a special purpose. In EC 999, he and the other souls were pulled back to the Third Period as the ground world merged with the Hellish Yard.[15] Once there, Arth and Anne returned to the royal palace with Riliane and allowed her to throw a dinner party for everyone from their era.[16] During the festivities, the royal couple stayed behind from the crowd so as to not upstage their daughter;[17] later, they inhaled some of the Eighth Gift in the air and and fell into a deep sleep.[16]

Soon after Arth awakened, he encountered Germaine Avadonia, pleased to meet Leonhart's daughter for the first time. Learning from her that they were the only ones awake, Arth speculated that their falling asleep was the doing of the Tasan Party soldiers now surrounding the palace and, soon after, he walked out to find out what they wanted. Meeting with the soldiers' commander, the spirit of Tony Ausdin, Arth learned that the soldiers were there waiting for reinforcements to go after a "criminal" they hoped to capture.

Returning inside with Germaine, Arth met with more of the party-goers who had by then awakened; finding that Riliane was missing from among them, he deduced she was the one the soldiers were after. Once everyone awoke, they gathered in the Hall of Mirrors and discussed the situation with the soldiers and Riliane; determined to save his daughter, Arth requested that anyone else who also wanted to protect Riliane come forward, acknowledging, when York pointed it out, that she had done terrible things to a lot of them. After Germaine offered her help to Arth, several others also came forward and they set out against the spirit soldiers.[17]

Fight for a New World[]

By the next sunrise, the fighting had already broken out; after sending George Ausdin to scout the enemy forces, Arth received his report about the weaknesses in the enemy side. After they discussed their current disadvantages, Anne reassured Arth and, with his resolve strengthened, he led another attack on the advancing soldiers.[17] Sometime later, he reassured Yukina while a transformed Kyle Marlon used his demon form to attack the Tasan troops. Arth then told her, albeit obliquely, the story of how he was turned into a mud golem, though he was eventually interrupted by Anne.

Not long after, Arth and his allies then struggled and failed to deal with the black box that arrived their way, which quickly began to suck up all of the souls in sight. Holed up in the palace, as they discussed their situation Arth and the others met with Nemesis Sudou, whom Arth soon recognized as Elluka Clockworker. After speaking with Nemesis, Arth at her request left dealing with the black box to her.

Not long after, Nemesis defeated the black box and all the souls sucked inside were freed, albeit no longer wishing to do battle. Arth, along with Allen, later met with Nemesis on the roof of the palace as Nemesis prepared to continue searching for Riliane and, as she was also missing, Gumillia. Arth also discussed the possibility that she meet with Lich, who may be able to help rebuild the world by creating new bodies for them.

After the three of them talked further, Nemesis and Allen headed off, leaving Arth behind.[18] Much later, Germaine met with Arth on the rooftop and discussed how the sky had changed in the north, really a result of Allen's meeting with Ma that now threatened to destroy everything. With the few soldiers still willing to fight, Arth and Germaine led an assault on Evil's Theater.[19] While Allen and Nemesis faced off against Ma possessing Riliane's body, Arth and his followers joined in the chorus singing the Clockwork Lullaby to aid them.[20]

King of the Dead[]

After Allen and Riliane disappeared from the Third Period, a gate appeared in the Millennium Tree Forest leading to the Fourth Period they'd created with the Re_birthday function; with several souls being uncertain about crossing into the new world, Arth remained behind to calm the remaining souls and direct them to the gate, while letting Gallerian Marlon and Michelle Marlon handle any Tasan soldiers still fighting with the other souls. As he did, however, he learned about a group of undead soldiers called "Outlaw" that were still unable to die and thus unable to move on.

Having spoken with Banica Conchita about Lich, who was now in her employ, Arth sent Bruno Zero to summon the former forest spirit to the illusory Lucifenian Palace for his aid. During this time he met Seth Twiright, disguised as Keel Freezis, who also expressed interest in Outlaw. Once Bruno Zero returned Arth greeted Lich in their old meeting place, and afterwards sent Bruno to fetch Keel while he explained the situation to Lich. After some convincing, Arth got Lich to agree to look into Outlaw, though having to inform him soon after that Banica and the others were currently away and wouldn't be joining him. After Bruno brought him to the discussion, "Keel" was also allowed to tag along.

As they prepared to leave, Lich asked Arth what he planned to do when everything was settled and Arth explained his intention to stay behind for the sake of the souls who didn't wish to move on to the new world, even suggesting that there could still be a way for the Third Period to be revived. With that Arth allowed Lich to depart, further resolved to leave the Fourth Period and the people in it in Riliane and Allen's hands.[3]

Later on, Keel returned alone and informed Arth of all that had occurred with Outlaw; as Lich and the freed souls made it back on foot, Arth went out to greet Lich while Mariam led the released souls the rest of the way to the palace. There Arth informed him of Banica's return, Eater Sabella bringing what appeared to be a mansion along with her, and he allowed Lich to go reunite with his master.[21] He then called over Nemesis, recognizing her as Elluka, and asked her about Amostia; Nemesis remarked that they couldn't do anything about him nor Luna, whom he had brought with him to a parallel world.[22] Later, Arth participated in the ball at the Lucifenian Royal Palace.[23]

Arth, king and conqueror

Soon after Arth passed, it was publicly declared that he had died of Gula; a political struggle also broke out between ministers over the right of succession after Minister Presi Rogzé forged a will claiming Princess Riliane was Arth's true successor. In the wake of the incident, the King's heir, Prince Alexiel, was entrusted to Leonhart as his adopted child, "Allen," while the prince was publicly declared dead.[13]

While the fighting between Lucifenia and its neighbors continued, Arth's conquests left Lucifenia the largest and most powerful nation in history. Although stabilized for years by his wife's rule for nearly a decade, the tyranny caused by Princess Riliane following her mother's death led to the Kingdom's swift decline, with starvation and crime becoming rampant.[4] The Lucifenian Revolution in EC 500 ended the Lucifen dynasty and led to a Marlon occupation by Prim's son King Kyle.[8]

The child he unknowingly sired with Prim, Ney Phutapie, became a tool used by her mother and her close compatriot, Abyss I.R., and eventually served as a spy in the royal palace to help undermine Riliane's rule.[24] She later led Marlon's invasion of Beelzenia in EC 505 but failed in her conquest, dying in Marlon after the Battle of Castle Hedgehog.[1]

Historically, Arth was famed in legend as the great king that spearheaded Lucifenia's conquests along with the Three Heroes,[11] with some believing he was capable of uniting all of Evillious under his banner.[25] Elluka would remain grieved by his death and her apparent failure to save him from the Gula disease, recalling him while also mourning Shaw Freezis' death.[26] During the confrontation with Fourth Shadow, she similarly mocked Elluka for her failure to save her dear friends.[27]

Personality and Traits[]

"Though you could say it’s a fault, too. It looks like I’ve passed that trait on to Riliane."
―Arth regarding his confidence[src]

Arth's resolve to fight out of love

Arth was an ambitious and idealistic man. Because of his love for humanity, Arth was deeply patriotic and desired to expand Lucifenia into a powerful and united kingdom, warring with Asmodean and Beelzenia for decades for that end. This firm resolve was even strengthened of Anne's acceptance of his nature as a mud golem.[14]

Compounding Arth's love for humanity was a powerful confidence; employing a strong resolve to boost his men's morale,[17] he seldom doubted his beliefs even when they were unfounded and, after his death, saw himself as the one who made Lucifenia a great country. Arth was aware of his confidence and believed it to be one of his strengths, although he also recognized the dangers of such confidence and was aware that it was a flaw in his daughter.[16]

As a military leader, Arth largely dealt in all-out offensives, preferring to direct his soldiers to overwhelm his opponents.[28] Arth was also capable of reckless behavior for the sake of his dream, charging into Beelzenia despite the risks in order to take advantage of its being weakened by plague.[12] However, Arth was also capable of restraint and practicality,[4] seen in his decision not to invade the disadvantageous Elphegort and in his refusal to splurge during wartime.[10]

Skills and Abilities[]

"I have... always thought that people are born having a certain status, or means. Uniting Evillious–that is a grand undertaking to have, I think. But I'm afraid there is a limited amount of people who'd be able to pull that off."
―General George Ausdin[src]

Arth was a proficient military leader, able to effectively command his troops and expand Lucifenia into the most powerful kingdom in Evillious by the time of his death. As part of this, Arth was learned in the art of swordplay,[29] and earned fame on the battlefield as a result. Arth also had a commanding presence, inspiring confidence and loyalty in his subordinates and earning respect from almost everyone he met. Compounding this presence was a charisma, with Arth being the object of affection for numerous women during his time as a prince.[1]

As a golem, Arth's mud doll body was capable of performing the basic human functions of eating, sleeping and moving, although the king lacked any actual blood in his veins. Aside from this, Arth's body had a short lifespan, giving out after around two decades. Said body also prevented Arth from siring biological children, although he would later miraculously surpass this rule on two occasions.[14]

Character Connections[]

Anne Lucifen d'Autriche: Arth's wife. Arth grew to love Anne over the course of their friendship and eventually married her, Anne being one of the only ones to know his true nature as a mud golem. Although their marriage was temporarily strained by their inability to conceive children it nonetheless remained close and loving even centuries after their deaths.

Prim Marlon: A childhood friend of Arth's. The two were friends over the course of Arth's youth, however their relationship became distant after Prim was suspected of poisoning Arth's wine glass. Due to the influence of the Venom Sword, Arth's feelings for Prim became passionately romantic, prompting their affair. Despite their complex relationship, Arth was in favor of uniting their houses with Riliane's marriage to Kyle.

Alexiel Lucifen d'Autriche: Arth's son. Impressed by Alexiel's thoughtfulness even from a young age, Arth was proud of his son and confident in his ability to rule. He continued to be proud of Alexiel's essential role during the Third Period's end times, and trusted him with looking after his sister Riliane.

Elluka Clockworker: One of Arth's subordinates. Arth found Elluka's magical abilities useful in battle and the two formed a close friendship, with Elluka defecting to aid the former. This bond continued until Arth's death during the war.

Mariam Phutapie: One of Arth's subordinates. Arth was impressed by Mariam's skills in espionage and assassination at such a young age and formed a close friendship with her after the latter defected. This bond continued until Arth's death during the war.

Leonhart Avadonia: One of Arth's subordinates. Arth relied on Leonhart's skill as a swordsman in battle and the two formed a close friendship over the course of the war; this bond continued until Arth's death during the war.
